The Wikimedians of Lagos User Group desire to improve and enrich the Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia by addressing two major gaps: the lack of photos on articles and the limited contributor base fluent in Nigerian Pidgin who are confident and skilled in Nigeria pidgin Wikipedia editing.
We believe that photos are not just aesthetic additions, but powerful tools that enhance comprehension, context, and engagement. Yet, despite the availability of millions of photos on Wikimedia Commons, many Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia articles remain bare, unillustrated, and underdeveloped. This visual gap reduces the appeal and educational value of our content.
Nigerian Pidgin Wikipedia is a growing project with tremendous potential, but participation remains relatively low due to limited training opportunities and awareness among local communities in Lagos who speak Nigerian pidgin. We want to bring more of these voices into the Wikimedians of Lagos User Group community and empower them with the tools to contribute meaningfully to Nigerians Pidgin Wikipedia.
Our main approach to solving these problems is to host a five-day, immersive training, writing contest, and photo-edit-a-thon that equips participants with the skills to improve existing articles by adding relevant images and creating new high-quality content. We are focusing not just on a one-time campaign, but on long-term growth and retention by establishing a mentorship and follow-up structure.
