The Wikipedia Tour in the South of Tunisia is a transformative initiative aimed at empowering individuals in the region by introducing them to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Many students, teachers, and local community members in southern Tunisia are unfamiliar with these platforms and the opportunities they provide for sharing knowledge. This project seeks to bridge that gap by offering hands-on workshops, photowalks, and community-building activities that teach participants how to edit, upload, and contribute content. By focusing on the unique cultural, historical, and natural heritage of southern Tunisia, the tour not only enriches Wikimedia platforms but also ensures the region’s stories and landmarks are represented globally. The ultimate goal is to build a sustainable community of contributors who can continue sharing their knowledge and enriching the digital presence of Tunisia.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

As part of the Wikipedia Tour in the South of Tunisia, we plan to organize 10 workshops in 10 different towns across the southern regions of Tunisia, focusing on Tozeur, Gafsa, Sfax, and Gabes. Each workshop will host 10 participants, providing hands-on training on editing Wikipedia, contributing to Wikimedia Commons, and understanding other Wikimedia projects. By the end of the workshops, we aim to introduce and train 100 new editors, equipping them with the skills to contribute effectively to Wikimedia platforms.

Following these workshops, we will evaluate the participants based on their engagement, contributions, and potential. The top 25 participants will be invited to a three-day edit-a-thon, where they will collaborate to create and improve articles, upload media, and participate in other Wikimedia activities. This intensive event will not only deepen their skills but also foster a sense of community among contributors, encouraging them to continue their involvement and inspire others in their regions.

By focusing on training, collaboration, and community building, this initiative aims to leave a lasting impact, ensuring that the voices and heritage of southern Tunisia are well-represented on Wikimedia platforms.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Our team is composed of four dedicated members, each bringing valuable skills and experience to the project:

Naim Garboussi (You): As the Trainer and Head of the Project, you will be responsible for leading the workshops, providing training on Wikimedia projects, and overseeing the overall execution of the project. With your extensive experience in Wikimedia initiatives and your leadership in organizing Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth in Tunisia, you are well-equipped to guide participants.

Mayselen Mansri: As the Coordinator with Partners, Mayselen will manage relationships with key partners, such as the Tunisian Scouts, educational institutions, and local community organizations. Her role will be essential in ensuring seamless collaboration and communication between stakeholders.

Hedaya Abbassi: As the Logistics Member, Hedaya will handle the logistical aspects of the project, including organizing transportation, accommodations, venues, and ensuring all necessary materials are available for workshops and events. Her attention to detail will be vital for smooth operations.

Houssem Houmi: As the Communications Member, Houssem will manage all communications, including promoting the project on social media, liaising with the media, and ensuring that participants are well-informed before, during, and after the activities. His role will be key in raising awareness and building a strong connection with the target audience.

All team members are experienced with Wikimedia projects and are active contributors within the Wiki Club Metlaoui, ensuring a high level of knowledge and dedication to the success of the project.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

The target participants for this project are students, teachers, and community members from southern Tunisia, specifically in the regions of Tozeur, Gafsa, Sfax, and Gabes. The project aims to engage individuals with a passion for learning, cultural preservation, and storytelling, even if they have no prior experience with Wikimedia projects. To attract participants, we will establish partnerships with the Tunisian Scouts, leveraging their extensive network and community presence to reach potential participants. During the activities, participants will receive hands-on training in workshops designed to be interactive and localized, focusing on creating content that reflects their communities. Following the activities, we will provide ongoing mentorship, create online support groups, and organize follow-up events such as webinars and edit-a-thons to keep participants engaged and ensure their sustained contribution to Wikimedia projects.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

No

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. 11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

To discuss the idea of the Wikipedia Tour in the South of Tunisia with community members and relevant groups, we took a collaborative approach. Our team initially held internal discussions to define the project’s goals and structure. We then engaged with members of Wiki Club Metlaoui, gathering feedback to refine the project based on their suggestions. We reached out to local educational institutions, cultural organizations, and the Tunisian Scouts to explore partnership opportunities and assess the needs of potential participants. Online discussions were held on platforms such as Wikimedia Tunisia’s community pages and Meta-Wiki, where we invited feedback from both local and international Wikimedia contributors. This open dialogue allowed us to adjust the project’s objectives, ensuring it aligns with the community’s needs and fostering a sense of collaboration and ownership among all involved.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

Through this project, we hope to gain valuable insights into several aspects of Wikimedia engagement. First, we aim to better understand the specific needs of communities in southern Tunisia, allowing us to tailor future outreach efforts to underserved regions. We also hope to learn effective strategies for building sustainable local Wikimedia communities that can serve as models for other areas. Engaging new participants and keeping them motivated over time is another key goal, and we hope to identify the most effective training methods for fostering long-term contributions. Additionally, by collaborating with local organizations such as the Tunisian Scouts, we hope to improve our approach to partnerships and community-building. Finally, through this initiative, we expect to expand our knowledge of the local cultural, historical, and natural heritage, contributing to the representation of underrepresented topics on Wikimedia platforms. Ultimately, we aim to foster a more diverse and engaged Wikimedia community in Tunisia while learning valuable lessons that will shape future initiatives.

20. What tools would you use to measure each metrics? Please refer to the guide for a list of tools. You can also write that you are not sure and need support. (required)

To measure the success and impact of this project, we will use the Programs & Events Dashboard (PED), a tool that will allow us to track and evaluate key metrics throughout the initiative. This includes monitoring participant engagement, such as the number of attendees at workshops and their progression in editing skills. The dashboard will also help us assess the amount of content contributed, including articles, images, and edits made by participants after each session. Additionally, we will track the long-term sustainability of the project by measuring continued contributions from participants beyond the workshops, particularly during follow-up activities like the edit-a-thon. By using the PED, we can gather real-time data, make informed decisions, and ensure transparency in reporting to partners and the broader Wikimedia community, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of the project.
