The idea of training Out-of-School Girls was born out if the need to promote equality and diversity within the Wikimedia movement by giving Out-of-School Girls equal access to telling their stories through the Wikimedia Projects of Wikipedia and Wikidata. This project also aim to help the marginalised member of the society to develop soft skills of communication, and digital skills which could help them strive for survival Out-of-School. It is believed that this training will help participants build their potentials towards becoming independent women who could gain additional learning through their contributions to the Wikimedia projects.



Additionally, the crucial issue of women underrepresentation in both content creation on the two Wikimedia projects Wikipedia Wikidata, as well as in leadership positions will be addressed. This will help the improvement of diverse perspectives in online contents on Wikimedia projects.


This project is focused on the empowerment of the marginalized group of girls who are Out-of-School to become active and influential contributors to the Wikimedia projects. Contents relating to the women's lives, marginalisation, subjugation and violence will be created to help promote the rights of women in the society.

This project will be carried out in Kwara State Nigeria in partnership with the Kwara State University, Center for Community Development. This collaboration is necessary as the Centre will help in the selection and coordination of the Out-of-School Girls within the community who will be participating members of this project. The facilitators of this project are experienced Wikimedians who will provide the on-wiki trainings to the participants.

The target participants are Out-of-School Girls in Kwara State. To reach out to the participants, and application form will be designed using the Google forms. Participants that applied will be forwarded to Kwara State University’s Centre for Community Development for background checks. Selected participants will be engaged through email and a WhatsApp channel to coordinate the one-month long event including both physical and online meetings which will be scheduled on Google meet.


Participants' contributions will be monitored through the outreach dashboard during the project execution period. After the event, the project team will carryout additional outreach through our networks and through the event WhatsApp group to answer psrticipants’ questions and help address their problems when the need arise during their contributions to the Wikimedia projects.

The participants for the proposed project are from age 18 and above. The legal age with the right to vote and be voted for in an election in Nigeria is age 18. Despite this, the project facilitators will comply with the local and international law of youth safety.
