Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Wikipedia town by code for Yamashiro 2024 Project (ID: 22458710)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
This grant enabled us to hold the "Wikipedia Town Etchu Kitamaebune and Hojo-zu" event in the Hojo-zu area of Imizu City, Toyama Prefecture (March 20, 2025, a public holiday).
This event was organized by the local Code for Toyama City, with Code for Yamashiro, the grant application organization, acting as a cooperating partner. It was implemented as an initiative to promote local culture, with the participation of local shrine and museum officials and residents.
Event Overview:
• Date and Time: March 20, 2025 (Thursday, public holiday) 10:00-16:00
• Venue: Shinminato Central Cultural Center (Koshuha Hall) Training Room 2 (Imizu City, Toyama Prefecture)
• Organizer: Code for Toyama City
• Cooperation: Code for Yamashiro
• Participants: 17 people
Activities:
In the morning, we conducted a walking tour of the Hojo-zu area, visiting Hojo-zu Hachimangu Shrine, the Kitamaebune Museum, the townscape along the Uchikawa River, and the site of the Kitamaebune port.
In the afternoon, we returned to the Shinminato Central Cultural Center and edited Wikipedia articles based on library materials and information gathered from local interviews.
Results:
• Five articles related to the Hojo-zu area ("Hojo-zu Hachimangu Shrine," "Hojo-zu Hikiyama Festival," "Kitamaebune," "Uchikawa (Toyama Prefecture)," and "Hojo-zu") were newly created or edited on Wikipedia.
• 20 photos (shrines, townscapes, etc.) were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
• Local culture and history were published with reliable sources, documenting them in a way that can be shared with people outside the region.
• Knowledge transfer from the older generation to the younger generation took place, and many participants responded that it "provided an opportunity to rediscover the region."
Most Effective Approach for Achieving Results:
The most effective approach was holding a Wikipedia Town event where local shrine and museum officials participated, and local history and culture were passed down from the elderly to the young. Furthermore, the knowledge obtained from the older generation on-site was reconfirmed with books. By clearly citing sources and incorporating them into Wikipedia articles, we created more reliable Wikipedia articles and enabled local residents to share local information.
We also cooperated with the following Wikimedia Town activities and served as an instructor: 2025-03-08 Wikipedia in El Library Date: March 8, 2025 (Saturday) 10:00-17:00 Organizer: El Library Location: El Library (El Osaka 4th floor, 3-14 Kitahama Higashi, Chuo-ku, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture) Details: Event Information Editing Items: New items: Osaka Social Labor Movement History, Osaka Social Movement Association; Additions to: Osaka Industrial Labor Museum, General Council of Trade Unions of Japan, Fujinagata Shipyard, Sanji Muto (businessman) https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project:Outreach/Wikimedia_Town/Archive/2025#2025%E5%B9%B43%E6%9C%88

On March 20, 2025 (Thursday, public holiday), the **"Wikipedia Town Etchu Kitamaebune/Hojozo"** event was held in the Hojozo area of Imizu City, Toyama Prefecture. This event was organized by Code for Toyama City, with Code for Yamashiro participating as a cooperating organization. The venue was Training Room 2 of the Shinminato Central Culture Hall (Koshuha Hall), and 17 people participated, including local shrine and museum staff, general citizens, and students. In the morning session, a town walk was conducted, visiting local historical sites related to the Kitamaebune (Northern Route trading ship) culture, such as Hojozo Hachimangu Shrine, the Hojozo Kitamaebune Museum, and the townscape along the Uchikawa River. On-site, participants were able to hear directly from shrine priests and museum staff, allowing for the transmission of local history and culture from older generations to younger ones. In the afternoon session, Wikipedia editing was conducted, and participants added to and improved Wikipedia articles based on library materials and local history documents. Participants were divided into teams and assigned themes related to the region, such as "Hojozo Hachimangu Shrine," "Hojozo Hikiyama Festival," "Kitamaebune," "Uchikawa (Toyama Prefecture)," and "Hojozo." After the editing session, a presentation was held to share the added content and how sources were cited by each group.
Post-event evaluation: Feedback shared among the organizers, instructors, and participants included comments such as, "The structure integrating on-site experience and Wikipedia writing was easy to understand," and "We were able to learn about the region from older generations." 3. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with this Rapid Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals. Required. Select one option per question. (required)
| A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups | → → I somewhat agree.
Many people who ordinarily have few opportunities to participate in Wikimedia activities, such as those from local museums, shrines, and the elderly, participated. In particular, we succeeded in getting the older generation to participate. |
| B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community |
I strongly agree. Through Wikipedia editing, an environment was created to pass on local history and culture from the elderly to the younger generation. A culture of mutual learning was formed through town walks and editing sessions. |
| C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups | I strongly agree.
We have enhanced articles on regions and themes for which there is little information available nationwide, such as Hojo-zu and Kitamae ships, and published them as reliable information. |
| D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives | I somewhat agree.

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: The goal is to learn about the know-how of communicating local history and culture from the older generation to the younger generation through the medium of Wikipedia.
Learning Objectives: "To learn the know-how of transmitting local history and culture from older generations to younger generations through Wikipedia." What was learned: This project aimed to "learn the know-how of transmitting local history and culture from older generations to younger generations through Wikipedia." Through the implementation, we learned that it is effective to combine oral transmission through face-to-face storytelling with verifying the knowledge obtained from older generations through books, and then reflecting this information in Wikipedia articles while clearly citing the sources. Moving forward, we will utilize these results and collaborate with local residents in the Tokai and Hokuriku regions to establish a model for cultural preservation and regional education through the regular holding of Wikipedia Town events.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Positive Unexpected Events: A positive unexpected event at this event was that local cultural and religious figures (such as the assistant priest of Hojo-zu Hachimangu Shrine and the representative of the Hojo-zu Kitamaebune Museum) participated as attendees and contributed to the discussions and editing. This allowed for collaborative work with those who are custodians of local culture at this event. Furthermore, the event was covered by local media (Chunichi Shimbun), and the event was featured as a local news story, leading to wider dissemination. In addition, some participants expressed a desire to hold a similar event in their own region, which became an opportunity for the Wikipedia Town activity to spread throughout the Hokuriku region. Unexpected Challenges: On the other hand, many participants were editing Wikipedia for the first time, and the process of creating accounts and verifying sources took time, resulting in delays in writing compared to what was anticipated. Through this experience, we learned the importance of informing participants about account creation in advance. Lessons Learned: • Support for beginners (account creation, handling of sources) is essential for smooth progress on-site. • Communicating the activity widely to the community through media coverage has the effect of encouraging continued participation. Based on these experiences, in future events, we intend to structure the program with "collaboration between regional experts and editing beginners" as a premise, and aim to build a sustainable Wikipedia Town model that involves a more diverse range of people.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required) This will be reported at the Wikimedians of Japan User Group/events/West-Japan Wikimedia Conference 2025.
