We are applying for the Rapid Fund grant to initiate a series of workshops aimed at kickstarting a larger program dedicated to enhancing the digital presence of Breton culture, heritage and language. The change we seek to bring about is the increased representation and preservation of Breton culture in the digital realm, particularly within the Wikimedia ecosystem. The digital preservation and promotion of Breton culture, heritage and language face a crucial challenge.
Breton is classified as "severely endangered" by UNESCO (https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000187026/PDF/187026eng.pdf.mult i). Despite being spoken by around 200,000 people (http://www.bretagne.bzh/jcms/prod_435654/fr/enquete-socio-linguistique-qui-parle-les-langues-de-bretagne-aujourd-hui?lg=fr) and tied to a region of 4.7 million inhabitants with exceptionally rich cultural and heritage assets, the Breton-language Wikipedia (br.wikipedia.org) remains structurally under-resourced: a small base of active contributors, limited topical coverage, and very few editors trained in modern Wikipedia editing standards. This project aims to bring durable change by training a new generation of contributors — drawn from Brittany's dense network of cultural associations, libraries, museums, Breton-language schools (Diwan, Div Yezh), and university circles — to edit Wikipedia in Breton and in French on topics related to Breton culture, language, and heritage.
The scarcity of content and contributors not only hinders the global recognition of our rich heritage but also affects the diversity of the digital knowledge ecosystem. Our proposal aims to bridge this gap by creating a local participation group in Quimper, dedicated to amplifying the digital presence of Breton culture, language and heritage on Wikimedia ecosystems. Our project is not merely about increasing content volume; it's about ensuring the survival and thriving of Breton culture in the digital age. By integrating it into such open content online tools, we aim to safeguard our heritage for future generations. This initiative will facilitate a broader global understanding and appreciation of our unique cultural identity, promoting cultural diversity and inclusivity on a global scale. The successful implementation of this proposal will enable the Breton community to share its rich cultural narratives and linguistic heritage with the world, fostering a deeper intercultural dialogue and mutual respect among diverse global communities. These approaches were selected based on a thorough analysis of the challenges facing the digital representation of minority cultures and languages. Evidence from similar initiatives has shown that community engagement and partnerships are critical to success. Our strategy leverages the strength of local knowledge and a combination that has been effective in other contexts in preserving and promoting linguistic diversity. A distinctive aspect of our proposal is the focus on multimodal (image, text, audio, video) and multilanguage contributions. This innovation is grounded in research indicating that rich, diverse content types enhance the learning and appreciation of cultural and linguistic nuances. By adopting this comprehensive approach, we aim to create a more engaging and informative digital presence for the Breton culture, heritage and language, setting a precedent for similar initiatives worldwide.
The goal is not a one-off event but the structuring of a small but active community that can sustain editing activity beyond the project's end, and that can act as a relay between Brittany's existing cultural ecosystem and the Wikimedia movement. This directly addresses several priorities of Wikimedia 2030: Ensure Equity in Decision-Making (giving voice to a minority linguistic community) and Identify Topics for Impact (endangered languages and underrepresented regional heritages), Invest in Skills and Leadership Development (supporting new contributors).

The project consists of a series of workshops workshops organized with the support of experienced Wikimedian Lucas LÉVÊQUE https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Lucas_Lévêque , dedicated to beginners, new editors, and contributors, empowering community members with the skills needed to contribute effectively. We will collaborate with local cultural institutions such as museums and universities (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper, Musée Départemental Breton and the Musée de Pont-Aven, Université de Bretagne Occidentale) to source authentic materials and content, like previously in the context of GLAM with the Ecole du Louvre https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projet:Enseignement_%C3%A0_l%E2%80%99%C3%89cole_du_Louvre . The project aims to improve the quantity and quality of content related to Breton culture, language, and heritage on Wikimedia platforms by involving the UBO and local cultural institutions like the museum of the city of Pont-Aven. The UBO will act as a leader and pioneer in this initiative, leveraging its expertise in the field of history, art, and cultural heritage.
The planned activities include:
- Collaborating with UBO's Parcours Histoire de l'art et Patrimoine program to integrate Wikimedia projects into the curriculum, providing students with the opportunity to contribute to the improvement of content related to Brittany's culture and heritage on Wikimedia platforms.
- Collaborating with UBO's Tourism program to give students the opportunity to improve the articles on Breton towns and cities, as well as on tourism events, for example, updating or creating articles on major Breton tourist attractions across Wikimedia platforms.
- Organizing training sessions and workshops for UBO faculty and students to equip them with the necessary skills to create and improve high-quality content on Wikimedia platforms.
- Engaging professionals of mediation from the museum of Pont-Aven and others cultural institutions
- Developing partnerships with local cultural institutions to facilitate access to resources and materials related to Breton culture and language, and to promote the creation of new content on Wikimedia platforms.
- Implementing a quality control process to ensure the accuracy and reliability of content related to Breton culture and language on Wikimedia platforms, involving experts from UBO, cultural institutions, and Breton language learning associations.
- Encouraging the use of multimedia and multilingual content to enrich the digital representation of Breton culture, language, and heritage, and to promote intercultural dialogue and mutual respect.

- Lucas LÉVÊQUE - Wikimedia Expert (Wikimedia username: Lucas Léveque) Lucas is a Wikimedian at the origin of Wikimedia projects such as Wiktionnaire and Lingua Libre with experience in organizing editing events and working with cultural institutions like Ecole du Louvre. He will be responsible for organizing training events, providing technical support to contributors, and collaborating with local cultural institutions to source authentic materials and content. - Sophie Kervran is the director and chief curator of the museums of Pont-Aven and the Musée de la Pêche in Concarneau, since 2020. A Brittany native trained at Université Paris 1 and the Institut national du patrimoine, she previously served as deputy director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Quimper. She is also an associate lecturer at the IUP Patrimoine of the Université de Bretagne Occidentale.
- Julien Bachelier is a lecturer in medieval history at the Université de Bretagne Occidentale (Quimper) and former director of the IUP Patrimoine, where he heads the Master's in Heritage and Museums (Patrimoine et Musées). A doctor in medieval history and a member of the Centre de Recherche Bretonne et Celtique (CRBC), his research focuses on medieval Brittany, settlement networks, and the development of towns and villages. The project team began its discussions in October 2023, engaging both Wikimedia and non-Wikimedia platforms to bring together community members, relevant stakeholder groups, and key institutions, including the Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO), the City of Quimper, museums, libraries, and Wikimedians from the local community and beyond. Since its inception in 2023, the project has gained concrete momentum: starting in 2024, actions have been carried out with students from the Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO), leading to two collaborative initiatives, the first within the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper and the second focusing on several works held at the Musée de Pont-Aven.
