6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Changes we are trying to bring: Through WikiTour 2.0, we aim to cultivate a new generation of young Wikimedians in East Malaysia by providing direct, hands-on exposure to Wikimedia projects in two underrepresented regions IPG Kampus Rajang (Sarawak) and University Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) . The ultimate change we hope to bring is a sustainable, youth driven ecosystem of Wikimedia contributors who actively engage in documenting, sharing and preserving local knowledge and languages through open access platforms.

Main challenges we are addressing: 1. Limited awareness and understanding of Wikimedia projects Many students, particularly outside of urban centers, are unfamiliar with Wikimedia as a movement or its platforms beyond casual Wikipedia use. This results in low participation from youth in regions like Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.

2. Underrepresentation of regional languages and cultures Languages such as Kadazandusun, Iban, and Semai are significantly underrepresented on Wikimedia platforms. As a result, local identities and knowledge systems remain invisible in the global digital knowledge space.

3. Lack of digital and open knowledge literacy Students have limited exposure to digital content creation, open licensing, or collaborative knowledge production—skills that are crucial for participating in Wikimedia and beyond.

4. Fragmented engagement and lack of continuity Even when workshops are conducted, participants often drop off afterward due to lack of ongoing support, community connection, or mentorship.

The change we want to create: We envision a future where students in East Malaysia become confident, long-term contributors to Wikimedia projects. Through WikiTour 2.0, we seek to:

  • Establish and grow localised Wikimedia communities in underserved regions of Borneo.
  • Foster a regional youth network that actively contributes to documenting local knowledge, cultures, and languages.
  • Increase the presence of content in indigenous and local languages (e.g., Kadazandusun, Iban) on Wikimedia platforms.
  • Encourage students to become knowledge advocates and digital changemakers, equipping them with skills in open knowledge, research, language preservation, and collaboration.

Main Strategies and Approaches: To achieve this, we have adopted several practical and evidence-based strategies. First, we will conduct in-person Wikimedia workshops that are beginner-friendly, multilingual, and tailored to the academic and cultural contexts of each campus. These workshops will cover Wikipedia and Incubator editing. Second, we will actively promote language diversity by encouraging contributions in local and indigenous languages. Third, we will facilitate student engagement through cross-campus communication channels and regional showcases, allowing participants to see the collective impact of their work. Finally, we will provide ongoing mentorship, recognition, and follow-up to ensure continuity, including the encouragement to form or sustain campus WikiClubs. We chose these approaches because they have proven effective in past initiatives by the Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia (WCUGM) and Kelab Wiki Kent. Our experience shows that students are more motivated and confident when learning is practical, culturally relevant, and socially connected. We believe that with the right tools, support, and community, these students can become long-term contributors to Wikimedia, enriching the global knowledge ecosystem with content from Borneo that is currently missing. ltimately, WikiTour 2.0 will empower students to preserve, document, and share their cultural and linguistic heritage while becoming part of a larger movement for open, equitable knowledge.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1. Wikipedia Editing Workshop Activity Description: Conduct workshops to introduce students to Wikipedia editing, focusing on how to create, edit, and update articles. The emphasis will be on contributing content in local and indigenous languages such as Kadazandusun, Iban, and Semai, as well as documenting cultural heritage and local knowledge.

Why It’s Effective: Wikipedia is a globally recognized platform. By teaching students how to edit and contribute articles, they will help enrich Wikipedia with important local and indigenous knowledge that is currently underrepresented. Students will learn to follow Wikipedia’s editorial guidelines, enhancing their digital literacy and critical thinking skills.

2. Wikimedia Commons (Image Documentation) Activity Description: Wikimamanau, a photography activity, will allow club members to capture images of local cultural events, landscapes, architecture, and traditions. These photos will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, enriching the visual representation of the region and making images available for global use.

Why It’s Effective: Wikimedia Commons is an open media repository that houses millions of freely usable images, audio, and video files. By contributing images to it, students will provide visual documentation of the rich cultural diversity of East Malaysia, which is often underrepresented on global platforms.

3. Writing Diffs (Documenting Experiences and Contributions) Activity Description: Participants will document their contributions and experiences in diffs (a type of detailed record), describing the changes they made to Wikipedia articles and images uploaded to Commons.

Why It’s Effective: Writing diffs encourages students to reflect on their work and track their progress, helping them learn from their experiences. It also creates a permanent record of their contributions to Wikimedia, which can be revisited and shared with others.

Why These Activities Will Be Effective for WikiTour 2.0 1.Practical Learning Each activity allows students to engage with different aspects of the Wikimedia platform, providing them with diverse skills in digital content creation and sharing.

2.Cultural Preservation By contributing to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, students will help preserve and document local and indigenous knowledge that is often missing or underrepresented in global platforms.

3.Cross-Campus and Cross-Border Collaboration Engaging students from multiple campuses and regions ensures the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and cultures, building a regional community committed to open knowledge.

4. Long-Term Engagement Writing diffs and uploading content to Wikimedia ensures that the students' contributions have a lasting impact and that they continue to engage with Wikimedia projects after the event.
