6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

In Nigeria, travel planning and tourism discovery are often limited to commercial tools such as Google Maps and Wakanow. However, Wikivoyage, a freely accessible Wikimedia travel guide, remains largely unknown and underused. This lack of awareness limits local participation, documented landmarks, and travel insights in Nigeria. It also contributes to the knowledge gap in how Nigeria’s destinations are represented to the world.

This project aims to bridge that gap by increasing the visibility and use of Wikivoyage through targeted outreach and content creation in four geopolitical zones: North Central, South West, South East, and North West. By training new contributors, improving travel-related articles, and documenting local attractions, the initiative will amplify Nigeria’s tourism and travel guide presence online while encouraging participation in open knowledge.

This project also focuses on reviving the use of Wikivoyage among Wikimedia contributors while promoting its relevance and usability for travelers and tourists. It aims to ensure that the necessary audiences are well-informed about the platform, its purpose, and how it can serve as a reliable and freely accessible travel guide for everyone.

Our approach to achieving this project entails a structured plan: Create Awareness: To encourage participation, we will utilize social media platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, and X to share stories, visuals and updates that spark interest in Wikivoyage as a platform for documenting travel guides and experiences. We will create awareness through community meetups, public talks, and outreach sessions.

Targeted Outreach: We are focusing on four geopolitical zones, North Central, South West, South East, and North West, to engage and explore how diverse communities relate to travel and tourism. Through this focused effort, we aim to recruit new contributors, bridge regional representation gaps, and ensure participation from different parts of the country.

Content Creation: Through the campaign period, we will organize a series of both physical and virtual engagements for each targeted geopolitical zone focused on Nigerian travel destinations and local attractions. Through this, we will support participants in creating new articles, improving existing ones, and adding multimedia such as photos and maps to enhance travel-related content.

Community Partnership and Engagement: We will establish partnerships with organizations, institutions, and tourism-related bodies like the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) and Uniquemappers. These collaborations will help extend the project’s reach, provide local context for content creation, and ensure sustainability beyond the campaign period. Additionally, we will actively engage the Wikimedia Nigeria community, university clubs, and local volunteers to foster a sense of ownership and continuous participation in improving Wikivoyage’s coverage of Nigeria.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Create Awareness: Through online and offline media, we plan to create awareness about Wikivoyage. We will utilize digital materials like flyers, short videos, and informative posts to help attract attention, build interest, and encourage participation. This approach would help participants understand the value of Wikivoyage and how they can actively contribute to it. and make use of it.

Virtual Session: The virtual session will be split into two sessions. The first session will serve as an introductory phase for participants and contributors. It will include an engaging presentation by the project lead and a representative from the National Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), aimed at providing an overview of the campaign’s goals and the importance of contributing to Wikivoyage. The second session will be held at the end of the campaign to evaluate the impact of the campaign and gather feedback from participants, which will help identify successes and areas for improvement in future campaigns.

Physical Training: To strengthen practical skills and encourage active participation, one in-person training session will be held in one location across each of the four geopolitical zones. These sessions will feature practical, hands-on training where participants will learn to create and improve articles, add photos and add maps on Wikivoyage. Each training session will round up with an edit-a-thon session to help participants implement the knowledge gained.

Contest: The campaign will conclude with an online contest open to all trained participants. Prizes will be awarded to the top three contributors and the best new editor for each geopolitical zone. This final phase aims to recognize participants’ efforts, encourage continuous engagement, and promote sustained contributions to Wikivoyage and other Wikimedia projects beyond the campaign period.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. We will conduct the edit-a-thon session which will allow participants to collaborate, ask questions and receive support from experienced editors and facilitators, and gain practical experience contributing to Wikivoyage.

After the campaign, a post-event survey will be shared to gather feedback and assess learning outcomes. Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

By organizing this project, we aim to gain knowledge and achieve specific learning outcomes:

Project Management: As project lead and facilitators, we aim to strengthen our project management and coordination skills by taking responsibility for planning, organizing, and implementing all aspects of the Wikivoyage campaign. This includes managing logistics, overseeing outreach activities across the four geopolitical zones, and ensuring that each phase aligns with the project’s objectives. Through this, we will gain hands-on experience in executing a nationwide awareness campaign on Wikivoyage.

Community Engagement and Building: We aim to understand how to effectively engage diverse communities and sustain their participation in Wikimedia projects. By reaching out to contributors, travelers, students, and tourists, we will learn the best approaches to recruit and retain volunteers. This will help us build a more inclusive and active community of Wikivoyage contributors in Nigeria, promoting collaboration among people with shared interests in travel, culture, and open knowledge.

Digital Awareness and Outreach: Through this project, we aim to learn how to leverage digital platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp, and X to create impactful awareness campaigns. By crafting and sharing creative visuals, stories, and updates, we will develop stronger communication skills and learn effective methods for promoting Wikimedia projects to new audiences.

Understanding Regional Representation: Engaging with contributors from North Central, South West, South East, and North West zones will allow us to learn about the unique travel perspectives and tourist attraction of each region. This will deepen our understanding of how regional diversity can enrich Wikivoyage content and contribute to closing the representation gap across Nigeria.

Content Development and Documentation Skills: By improving and creating Wikivoyage articles, we aim to enhance our skills in travel writing, research, and open-content documentation. This will help us better understand how to represent Nigeria’s tourism and cultural landmarks accurately while making Wikivoyage a reliable travel resource for both local and international audiences.
