The idea of a Wiki Women Advisory Council originated at Wiki Women Camp 2023 and the Advisory Council is currently working to setup the Wiki Women Task Force.

The Wiki Women* Task Force will address the crucial and persisting problem of underrepresentation of women* and marginalized genders in both content creation and leadership positions in the Wikimedia movement.[3] This not only limits the diversity of perspectives in online content, but also hinders the overall potential of the movement.

The goal of the Task Force is to empower women* and marginalized genders to become active and influential contributors in all aspects of the Wikimedia movement. The Task Force will do this both by providing connectivity and improved coordination between individual initiatives at the international level, and by engaging in more and better structured research on women's participation and needs in our movement.

To facilitate the nomination of the Wiki Women Task Force, the Advisory Council was created to support the election process and provide early guidance and strategic oversight of the Task Force in its early days. This grant application is to help cover the costs of the Advisory Council and the Task Force in the first stages of nomination, selection, recruitment and implementation.

The Wiki Women* Advisory Council focuses on the selection of the members for the Wiki Women* Task Force. Additionally the Advisory Council will create the initial working conditions for the Task Force, and onboard the final selected members for the work ahead.

After the Wiki Women* Task Force is onboarded and installed, the Advisory Council will step back, but continue to be involved as advisors for the Task Force.

Those that applied to be advisors are engaged through email, a Telegram channel to coordinate and weekly online meetings on Google meet, and we share our working documents through Google docs.

The Advisory Council strives to assemble a balanced working group that is representative of the diversity of women*'s participation in our movement. For this we might need to do additional outreach through our networks and by other general means to improve the diversity in the Advisory Council and Task Force.

We plan to use the momentum around International Women's Day on March 8, 2025 as an opportunity for outreach activities to raise awareness of the formation of the Wiki Women* Task Force in the broader movement.

You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

At the 2023 Wiki WomenCamp, there were two programmatic tracks: capacity building and strategy. The strategy cohort focused on collaborative, long-term efforts to advance the goals of the Wiki WomenCamp, including raising awareness of and closing the gender gap on Wikimedia, in terms of content and participation. The strategy sessions were divided into three main focuses: Research, Hubs & Engagement. While a hub can be a good tool to focus our project coordination and knowledge exchange, we think the lack of gender diversity should be a problem for all to address, and should not just be the responsibility of one affiliate.

The attendees in the Strategy track concluded that the underlying needs of women* in our movement include deeper and more continuous research and attention, so we know better what a potential Hub could focus on. However, it was recognized that creating a hub with only a small portion of contributors present would undermine collective efforts, and it was there that the idea for a Task Force originated. The Task Force would serve as the steering committee to guide and support collective efforts in closing the gender gap, including understanding and responding to the need of gender minorities and women in our movement.

The creation of the Task Force and nominations/volunteering to the Advisory and Support Group have been widely conducted at Wikimania and regional convenings to ensure inclusion and participation of all contributors in this

Through the Task Force, increasing representation of women in the Wikimedia movement and project, including research, convening discussions, and formulating recommendations to ensure inclusion. Our multifaceted approach tackles the gender gap on two key fronts:

Content and Leadership: The task force will advocate for increased participation from Women*, not just as content creators but also in strategic decision-making spaces. This ensures their voices are heard and their perspectives shape the future of the movement.

Customized Support: Recognizing that Women and marginalized genders may have unique needs, the Task Force will provide tailored support and engagement opportunities.
