Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The Advisory Council was able to nominate, evaluate and introduce the first-ever WikiWomen* Task Force (WWTF) – a dedicated group of 11 volunteers selected across South Asia, LAC, ESEAP, NWA, SSA, MENA and CEECA regions, who are committed to advancing gender equity across the Wikimedia movement. This was achieved after a rigorous and collaborative selection process.

On the Day before International Womens’ Day, 7 March 2025, the WWTF was presented in a Youtube live stream. In this 90 minute session we had presentations that shared the need for a task force and a dedicated group of women to work on improving representation of women in our movement. The recording is available here on Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WWTF_Launch_7_March_2025.webm.

2. Documentation of your impact. Please use space below to share links that help tell your story, impact, and evaluation. (required)

During our selection process, we kept the community updated by communicating about our progress on Meta, and sharing small summaries in Telegram groups related to the formation of the WikiWomen Task Force, and to the Gender Gap in general. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Women*_Task_Force/Updates

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: 1. Mapping diversity in Advisory Council, Task Force nominations & supporters

2. Balancing (and when necessary improving) diversity in the nominations for the Advisory Council and Task Force

3.Inventory of needs for setting up the Task Force to create an environment of equity and inclusion

1. We reviewed our diversity and agreed that the Advisory Council was sufficiently balanced for geographic diversity.

2. The position of the advisory council was self-nominating with different regions represented. This help improve the diversity and play a key role in the selection of the task force. However the nominations we received for the task force in the open call for candidates were unbalanced: while from some regions we had 10+ applicants, from several others we had 0 (zero). As Advisory Council members, we then worked through our own networks to motivate more women to apply. We succeeded partially: while in the end there are still some open seats, there were several editors that responded positively to our personal pleas to apply for a seat on the Task Force.

3. we identified the gender gap in Wikimedia space and open up call for nomination for the task force which involved different selection process put in place by the advisory council. After the task force were selected, we had 25 combined meetings with both the Advisory Council and the WWTF members attending. We focused on handing over our collective knowledge from the process we underwent, and getting the TF started with their work, while also leaving enough room for them to design their own path forward before we stepped down.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

There was nothing unexpected.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

The outcome of the Advisory Council Coordination has been disseminated on 7th of March, during the WikiWomen Task Force Lunch Party. The eleven candidates who have emerged after the rigorous selection processes were presented to the Wikimedia community. The WikiWomen Task Force Lunch was a 90 minutes call which featured an introduction, an outline of the event, a keynote, and a presentation of the history of women in the Wikimedia movement, including the WikiGap initiative, the trends and the present situation. Other features of the lunch included a fireside chat and a panel discussion. Also, a diff blog was published to share how the task force was established and proposed activities to sustain the force.
