Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The project was a great success, significantly increasing the visibility of LGBTQ+ topics related to Nigeria across various Wikimedia projects. It actively engaged both new and experienced editors, with a strong focus on queer representation and inclusion.

The project provided hands-on training for new editors from the LGBTQ+ community on how to contribute to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. It also re-engaged existing editors through a month-long writing contest and community activities.

Importantly, the project fostered strong partnerships with LGBTQ+ organizations in Nigeria, helping to broaden participation and ensure community trust. The contest attracted over 40 editors, including many allies from outside the queer community, further demonstrating inclusive engagement.

In total, the campaign resulted in the creation of 70+ new Wikipedia articles, more than 500 edits, and the upload of several hundred media files to Wikimedia Commons, helping to close important content gaps on Nigeria’s LGBTQ+ history and visibility.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: I want to learn about the extent of contributions of non-queer persons to queer topics on Wikipedia by Nigerians

During this project, we observed a surprisingly strong level of engagement from non-queer participants, many of whom expressed genuine interest in LGBTQ+ rights and representation. A significant number of contest entries and article contributions came from allies who had no prior history of editing queer-related content as a result of winning the prize.

While enthusiasm was high, we also noticed that many non-queer editors were unaware of the depth of underrepresentation of LGBTQ+ topics on Wikipedia. The contest served as both an editing activity and an educational opportunity that deepened understanding and empathy.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

The project activities proceeded as planned without any surprises. However, we also experience hostility from some Nigerian editors but we were able to quench due to the support of some experience Wikipedia editors.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We have already created a diff to report and also will share on meta Wikimedia as a detailed report.
