Part 1 Understanding your work
[edit]1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.
Our plan of activities presented during the grant request process helped us achieve our goals and objectives for 2023-2024. We followed our annual plan and collaborated with other organizers of global campaigns that directly aligned with our targets for the year, like Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos and SheSaid campaigns. We were able to roll-out the WikiDunong program among senior high school students in our locality. We were also able to conduct several training and edit-a-thons on how to improve our target Wikimedia projects -- WikiSambit, WikiKawikaan, and Wiksyunaryo. We have made good connections with our local community through the Women@Work Campaign and Community Merienda during the Human Rights Day Celebration.
2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?
During this period, we experimented on tracking organizers learning experience o every campaign or events they organized. We administer a uniform questionaire to identify there experiences based on their participation, level and effort given to the events they are organizing, organizing skills that needed imporvement, level of knowledge and skills acquisition, and the support they received during their organizing experience. We were able to document 47 responses from 18 organizers. Some of the organizers worked on two or more events.
3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?
Yes. As mentioned in Question no. 2, through data collection on organizers experience, we were able to develop the Volunteer Report Card. Wherein volunteers were informed on the results of their organizing experience as well as average volunteer hours rendered. Through this innovation, we were also able to track the qualitative nature of our organization's organizing experience instead of just tracking edits, and pages created on Wikimedia projects. We were able to identify different facets of organizing that needs further support, and which Wikimedia training skills that requires further training.
We can not really say if these innovations were done by other organizations, but we can say that by experimenting on this new way of looking at the qualitative aspect of our Wikimedia organizing, we have seen a new way of providing solutions to our challenges as organizers and trainers.
4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.
We were able to work with educational institution, cultural groups and the local government in our province. Including the different social sector like women, out of school youth and elderlies. Through our website and social media channels we share our upcoming activities and encourage different prospective partners to support our cause. We also build connection with our local community through our volunteers who do the groundwork of recruiting interested individuals to be new volunteers and editors. On the celebration of Central Bikol Wiktionary and Wikipedia Birthday, we were able to engage new editors through our Race to 7000 campaign on our social media. People went directly to our office as walk-in visitors and joined the campaign of improving words in our local language Wiktionary.

7. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?
Through our Women@Work campaign, we were able to reach out to women in our local community. Stories of these women were rarely heard of. Working on this campaign, we made the works of these women and their stories available to our volunteers and our community. We documented their work, listen to their stories and were insired on how they take on every challenge they faced as they navigate and balance working as a woman.
Part 2: Your main learning
[edit]8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?
Bridging the gender gap on Wikiprojects: Since our activities have focused more on training our editors, we have missed complying with this priority. But one of our members has finished the Organizer Lab training and has suggested using wiki tools to measure the existing gender gap in a certain wiki project. This will be used in our current programs.
Education Sector Partnership: A structured program has helped us connect with educational sectors, offering them possible learning outcomes their teachers and students may benefit from. There is a need to double-up the efforts in reaching out to other schools and universities to further add partnerships.
Wikimedia Incubator projects Development: Most of our members are Central Bikol speakers. It hindered our efforts to try developing other language incubator projects. There are three strategies we come up with: providing our learning hub with Philippine language dictionaries, which we can use in developing these projects; visiting the actual area and immersing ourselves in the local community; and partnering with local writers and cultural groups who have the same objective of language preservation.
Language Preservation Initiatives: The translation tool in Wikipedia has come in handy for most of the editors, even newbies. But we would need to back-up them up by proofreading the articles. We should shift the focus to having usable content instead of just adding the number of articles.
9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?
The general support fund differs a lot from the rapid grants our group has usually received. We would need to think of a long-term movement, align the outcomes with our overall objectives, and continuously sustain the momentum of our programs. Positive things that have come up during this period were having new partnerships, shifting our strategy to a more community-friendly approach (community merienda, Women@work interviews), and showcasing our group’s work through the clinics in Let’s Connect (How to Build a Wikimedia User Group, Cross-Regional - Let's Connect Grantee Partner Learning Conversation 1).
10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?
Our focus on language preservation and developing incubator projects was still part of our program. For the next grant period, some of the projects were initiated by other members, activities they knew would be suitable for our community and the demography we are working on. Other new priorities we have identified are expertise on campaign tools for our organizers, alignment of our projects to the Movement strategy, and identifying gaps not solely on gender but on other aspects of editing and campaign participation.
11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?
Through this fund, we were able to establsh a strong connection to our community by our Community Learning Hub. Initially, we only plan to have sa safe space for our volunteers to learn about Wikimedia projects and a place where to contribute. Through the process, we were able to open up this space to a more broader community where ordinary people can join our volunteers simply by reading a book, accessing the internet or playing with them (board games). We designed our Community Learning Hub to be inviting to people from all walks of life and that anyone will feel welcome, even just to sit and enjoy the view of our local community. As a team, we feel that building the Learnign Hub is our greatest accomplishment as it enbales us to do our volunteer work and feel safe in doing it.

Considering the culture of our community, we would need to produce a questionnaire/form that can supply us with the data needed in a way that the respondent would not be hesitant to provide answers. A short orientation as to why they should be providing information and the confidentiality of the data should also be conducted.

While we are already composed of regular members doing volunteer work for our programs, we would need to strengthen our administrative aspect. Most of the volunteers are still students and would need to divide time between our affiliate work and their studies. Inviting experts in the field is an option we seek to implement so that officers and the board will not be handling multiple tasks.

Our educational sector partners were approached directly by our group for our WikiDunong program, whereas other partners have connected with us through our visibility in social media and in our website. Partnering is more of marketing our group’s capacity to our prospects directed towards a common goal. It may be in a form of an interview, training, funding, and resource distribution, as long as it is inline with our objectives, we pursue the partnership.
Part 5: Sense of belonging and collaboration
[edit]21. What would it mean for your organization to feel a sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement?
The grant process has evolved through the years, making it simpler and less tasking for Wikimedians. We are aware of these changes since we’ve been accessing the rapid grants several years before, and even how we report each completed grant is easier as compared to before. Through a series of clinics organized by Let’s Connect in relation to the grant process, even newbie Wikimedians can now proceed with requesting grants that are in line with the movement and promise a practical impact on the wikiprojects. In 2021, as the Regional Grants Committee was formed, it has proven to be more equitable in terms of approving or, in other cases, not funding a certain grant. Each grant request was processed from the perspective of a movement volunteer, thus, they knew what was indeed helpful for the community or even for the region as a whole. These improvements have made the grant process more accessible to volunteers, who are receiving support for their initiatives.

Supporting Peer Learning and Collaboration

During one of the sessions of Let’s Connect, we were able to discuss our strategies on how to build a user group. We have included how we started with rapid grants, how we targeted a specific incubator project to have constant editors, how we partnered with other affiliates in the movement, and how we align the existing skills of our volunteers into our work. We have also released two newsletters that included the summary of our work, one of which is supported by the Art+Feminism.
One of our member was also invited by our program officer to help the Wikimedia Singapore in their campaign activities. It was conducted through a Let’s Connect session type discussion.

We do this rarely (less than twice a year)
29. How does your organization currently share mutual learning with other grantees?
Our group hosts a website where we release our announcements, inspiring stories, and campaigns we run, also the similar information is being published on meta. There is also a Cross-Regional Grantee Partner Sharing session where we will be able to share to the wider Wikimedia community our learnings and challenges, and in this session we’ll also be able to hear from other affiliates about their works in the movement.

We have an overspent of more or less 2,400 USD. Upon request, we overlooked to include the fiscal sponsorship fee, and failed to consider the possibilty of receiving multiple scholarship (to participate and present) for several Wikimedia in-person events. The overspent were used to cover volunteer support for accommodation and transit expenses not covered by the conference scholarships, and additional campaign and administrative expenses affected by budget re-alignment.
We provided a financial report in USD because there were expenses managed by Kiwix, our fiscal sponsor, in USD and Euro, like transfer fees, booking, etc. It is challenging to report everything in Philippine Peso. Any report provided by our fiscal sponsor will be considered superior and more reliable.
