Our activities and strategies were subdivided into six broad categories and implemented through some critical actions, which included effective management of projects by competent and experienced members of our community, communication flow, collaboration with academic institutions, and other Wikimedia affiliates.

GLAM initiatives

We worked on the "Audiovisuals of Yoruba Indigenous Vocations" to document indigenous vocations unique to the Yoruba people and culture to preserve the knowledge both for historical and educational purposes.

Contents generation

Our content generation activities were broadly divided into campaigns, contests, edit-a-thons, and drives. We organised a series of contests and campaigns to create content.

Capacity building

We organised various capacity-building trainings and sessions to help both new and existing members of our community build capacity.

Outreach and advocacy

We sustained our outreach programs, the WikiRadio show and 12 episodes were aired. We created a skit to promote the Yoruba Wikipedia on social media. The videos were viewed by more than 2 million people across various social media and attracted new editors to Yoruba Wikipedia.

Partnership

We partnered with numerous mission-aligned organization and donated our works to academic institutions

Conferences and other events

We organised the Celtic Knot Conference 2022, Wikimanian local event, and participated in the Wikimedia Summit in Berlin and the Wiki Indaba Conference in Rwanda.

Yes, we would like to highlight some strategies and approaches that are effective in achieving our goals. These strategies and approaches included the following

  1. We'd like to emphasize the widespread fact that the general support grant from the WMF worked well for our group. Members of our group did not apply for a rapid grant because we already had a general support grant approved, and they were happy to work with the user group instead of having to apply for a rapid grant to do an individual project.
  2. Collaborations with other established user groups locally (Wikimedia Nigeria, Igbo Wikimedians User *Group) and internationally (Wikimedia UK, Deoband Wikimedia Community)
  3. Partnership with the International Center for Yoruba Arts and Culture
  4. The donation of our Yoruba Indigenous Vocation (Oral Knowledge) audiovisual recordings to academic institutions helped us to connect with academic institutions
  5. Teamwork, effective participation of members of our community, and communication flows were all effective in achieving our goals.
  6. Registration as a non-profit organisation in Nigeria also helped us secure partnerships, as most organisations in Nigeria are more interested in partnering with registered organisations.

Donation of materials to academic institutions

We are the first Wikimedia affiliates in the Wikimedia movement to have donated Wikimedia-related contents or outcomes of projects, especially audiovisual works funded by the WMF, to academic institutions. We have not seen this done by other Wikimedia affiliates. We are indeed the group that reached out to Wikimedia UG Nigeria for a joint donation to these academic institutions, as well as a way to foster collaboration with local user groups in Nigeria. We are happy that this makes history in our movement.

Using skits by a comedian to recruit new editors

In the Wikimedia movement, we are the first affiliate to ever use a skit maker to recruit volunteers for a language version of Wikipedia. We have not seen this done by any affiliate. The one closest to this was done by the WMF in Nigeria, where the young comedians Emannualla and Mark Angel played the lead roles. We are excited about this project, as at least 50 new editors created accounts after seeing the video.

Using central notice banner to recruit new editors

We are undoubtedly the first affiliate that uses the central notice banner to recruit new editors for Wikipedia. In our Recruit readers as writers project, we host a central notice banner on the English Wikipedia and attach a form where people can register for training to contribute to the Yoruba Wikipedia. More than 500 people registered, and about 100 attended our trainings online and in person.

Our key learnings

  1. Audiovisual donation: Our learning shows that donating audiovisuals to academic and cultural institutions is an impactful way to connect these institutions, and governments to the Wikimedia community.
  2. Priority goals: Participants' priority goals align with some of our community's top priorities. Our community's top priorities were to increase the quality of contents on Yoruba Wikipedia, and to promote Yoruba Wikipedia.
  3. Internet limitation: The Internet continues to remain a challenge for participants and members of our community.
  4. Opportunity for improvement : Participants reported that the training program should be improved. Improvement could include direct improvement, such as the quality of training or indirect improvement, such as the creation of training materials or resources.
  5. Support for participants: Participants reported that they need internet data support, self-paced training materials, capacity building, mentorship, and protection from global IP blocks.

Our GLAM project on indigenous vocations unique to the Yoruba people was well received by academic institutions. We never knew that this was something that academic institutions would find interesting. Surprisingly, many academic institutions find it useful and have invited us to donate this resource to them. This resource has now been donated to at least three universities.

We use the central notice banner to recruit new editors for Yoruba Wikipedia. In our Recruit readers as writers project, we host a central notice banner on the English Wikipedia and attach a form where people can register for training to contribute to the Yoruba Wikipedia. More than 500 people registered, and about 100 attended our training online and in person. This was surprising, as we never imagined that this could work as well as it turned out.

One of the female participants said

I never knew that I would be able to edit Wikipedia. I have always thought that Wikipedia and its language versions are written by Americans and Europeans. I was excited when the banner popped up saying that I should register for a training on how to contribute to Wikipedia. Today, I am here, and I am so happy.

Improvement could include direct improvement, such as the quality of training or indirect improvement, such as the creation of training materials or resources. Based on this learning we have engaged the service of a professional to help create audiovisual trainings resources for Yoruba Wikipedia.
  4. Support for participants: Participants reported that they need internet data support, self-paced training materials, capacity building, mentorship, and protection from global IP blocks. Based on this learning, we have localized IP Block exemption module on the Yoruba Wikipedia
  5. Support for core team members: core team members need internet and staff support, self-paced training materials to share with participants prior to training, device such as laptops. We now have staff support, and the self-paced training resource is being developed.

There are multiple strategies that can be employed to effectively promote the dissemination of free knowledge. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach, a combination of various methods can yield significant results. One such strategy involves the act of donating educational resources produced by Wikimedian volunteers to academic institutions, thereby providing valuable learning materials for students and researchers. We are happy to have initiated this strategy.

  • International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture: We secured a partnership with the International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture.. The center has thousands of Yoruba books that can be used to write new articles and cited as sources for existing ones. They have agreed to work with Wikipedia in residence as part of our partnership. They would provide the WiR with internet, an office space, and a small training hall.
  • University of Ibadan: In 2022, we donated our audiovisual recording of Yoruba indigenous vocation to the university.. During the event, we talked about a potential partnership with the institutions, especially the Department of Linguistics and African Studies, to train academic staff and students on how to contribute to the Yoruba Wikipedia.

The Wikimedia movement, along with the broader free knowledge movement, offers a multitude of avenues for engaging in multidimensional collaboration. This power of collective intelligence and the initiatives it supports enable individuals from diverse backgrounds and expertise to come together and contribute to the creation and dissemination of knowledge. Throughout the course of this year, our organisation has actively engaged in fruitful collaborations with a multitude of Wikimedia affiliates, both on an international and local scale. These collaborative efforts have played a pivotal role in the successful implementation of our programmes. For our organisations, this means a lot, and the fact that we are providing free access to knowledge in a local language makes us feel fulfilled as an organisation.

Our personal sense of investment has increased significantly. We freely participate in global campaigns, contests, and conferences, and the funds we received have helped us to uniquely impact millions of people who read our contents on the Yoruba Wikipedia via some pragmatic projects.
