Project idea[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?[edit]

What problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

Pre-structured article templates have been used since 2015 to assist newcomers to start articles, giving a result of 8-10% of Greek Wikipedia's new articles in 2016 from people trained to start articles this way in their sandbox space. Libraries of thematic pre-structured article templates as well as tools for using them started to build in 2017-2018 period and are still under evaluation. While a pre-structured article page can greatly assist everyone to start an article, newcomers might be scared by a long article structure offered to be filled in and existing articles cannot yet benefit from these libraries. In result, trying to help people who have difficulty in structured thinking to contribute in articles might discourage potential editors that are scared of a big article structure to deal with. Additionally, most articles are usually left in a low class of quality as they cannot be easily compared to a well developed structure and improved by applying it on their content.

What is your solution to this problem?[edit]

For the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem. We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

Proposed article structure is already being stored in article template libraries' pages. These libraries can be improved by the local communities and used to feed a dynamic global thematic article structure library. This dynamic library can be used by a section suggestion and selection mechanism that can be applied to both new and existing articles. Global article templates will be available to all languages and each language will be additionally supported with local article assistive templates like infoboxes, navigation boxes, etc in artice structure. A simple structure version will be implemented, where applicable. Local Wikipedias could also exclude specific article sections as undesired. Using a global mechanism and centralized article structure, which is flexible enough to fit in all Wikipedias would have a lot more impact and save of effort for aplying it globally.

Project goals[edit]

What are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

  1. Increase the quality of new articles produced as they are built on a quality article structures
  2. Increase the quality of existing articles by filling in the missing sections in their structure
  3. Engage more newcomers to participate with ease and be retained as editors (support equity in contributing) by using the simplicity of selecting and filling in content with ease.

Project impact[edit]

How will you know if you have met your goals?[edit]

For each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:

  1. During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
  2. Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)

For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (i.e. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents). Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

  1. During the project development, training of a core of 12 world-wide program leaders will start. By the deployment and post of the tool, the trained program leaders will run editor trainings as well as editathons, (20 editors per program leader - 15 new and 5 experienced editors) and record results in quality of new articles produced, in improving the quality of existing articles and in engagement and retention of newcomers, as well as storytelling from people who were given more chances to participate. A survey for both program leaders and participants will take place. The whole story will be covered in an article on the project outcome.
  2. Wikipedia will keep benefiting from the tool as it will continuie to be used, world-wide. A group of trainers will be assembled to start training more program leaders, worldwide. The tool will receive feedback from the program leaders in order to be improved.

Do you have any goals around participation or content?[edit]

Are any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable.

  1. Total participants (240)
  2. Number of newly registered users (180)
  3. Number of content pages created, across all Wikimedia projects (200)
  4. Number of content pages created being at least c-class in quality, across all Wikimedia projects (180)
  5. Number of content pages improved, across all Wikimedia projects (300)
  6. Number of newly registered editors retained (27 or 15%)
  7. Percentage of participants stating they were given better chances to contribute in Wikipedia. (216 or 90%)

Project plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

  1. Software development milestones: Scope → Analysis/Software requirements → Design / Pilot → Development / Testing / Training / Documentation → Deployment → Post

Budget[edit]

How you will use the funds you are requesting? List bullet points for each expense. (You can create a table later if needed.) Don’t forget to include a total amount, and update this amount in the Probox at the top of your page too!

Community engagement[edit]

How will you let others in your community know about your project? Why are you targeting a specific audience? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve at various points during your project? Community input and participation helps make projects successful.

Videos of tutorials on usage of user sandbox+ tool in English Wikipedia have been prepared to be shared in Wikipedia Village Pumps in several languages, especially those where user sandbox+ has already been translated and activated. Community is expected to build local structured article template libraries, in mind and in intention to be used as a source for the global library of dynamically structured article templates. Program leaders that have already supported the development and creation of the sandbox+ tool are expected to use it as a pilot to using article template libraries and be the ambassadors to the communities. Other clones of user sandbox+ tool, supporting article template libraries for article creatin in several ways, like making a choice when clicking on red link, or pressing a button to select and create a new article, will also help producing reusable article structures to be imported to the dynamic library.

Get involved[edit]

Participants[edit]

Please use this section to tell us more about who is working on this project. For each member of the team, please describe any project-related skills, experience, or other background you have that might help contribute to making this idea a success.
