Samatics/After School Wikipedia Editing
After the Nigeria Markets on Wikidata event where teachers and students in secondary schools in Badagry, Lagos, Nigeria were participants, this project is building on this success by introducing the participants to Wikipedia editing. Two teachers in two different secondary schools (Badagry Senior Grammar School and ASCON Staff Senior Secondary School) that were participants in the previous event have shown interest in this pilot program. Each of these schools has a Literary and Debating Club headed by these teachers that meets after school hours every week on specific days. They already have interest in writing. Some of these students together with their teachers participated in the Wikidata event. I aim to introduce Wikipedia editing to this club in their schools, thus forming a Wikipedia club in the schools. If successful, such clubs may spring up in other secondary schools first in Badagry, and then in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria and Wikipedia reading and editing may subsequently become an integral part of the schools' curriculum.

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

6 Series of trainings/editathon

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I have informed the WUGN here

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

The teachers and principals of the two schools are already aware of such events coming up. Once this project proposal is approved, I will send a reminder through direct letter delivery and it will be announced on their assembly and during the meeting of the Literary and Debating Club. I will also use the WhatsApp group created during the Wikidata event to announce it. To create more awareness, It will be announced on the WhatsApp Group platforms for teachers and Principals in Badagry and in Lagos at large.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT

Samatics, Wikitician, Biowikician

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

  • Participants are teachers and senior secondary students of Literary and Debating Club with writing skills and have mobile devices.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

The teachers supervising the clubs will assist in encouraging the students to continue editing. A mini quiz competition will be held between both participating schools to measure their level of wikipedia editing. I will be added to the the club's WhatsApp group where I will be addressing questions from the students. I will continue to visit the school on their club's meeting date where I will be taking sessions on Wikipedia editing by switching between the English Wikipedia and the Simple English Wikipedia and assisting the supervising teachers in answering student's questions with the aim of establishing a Wikipedia Club.

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Risk Assessment protocol

8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project will also be used as a follow up participant engagement on continuous editing of Wikidata and will run till the end of the school's term. I will explore the indigenous language Wikipedia these teachers and students are also interested in contributing to and connect them to the community involved in promoting such language Wikipedia by showing them how they can transfer their English Wikipedia editing skills to other language Wikipedia.

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 6 (3 per school)
  2. Number of participants: 40 (20 per school)
  3. Number of new editors: 20
  4. Number of Simple English Wikipedia articles created or improved: 15
