This rapid grant would support the third edition of Architecture+Feminism, a yearly edit-a-thon held during Women’s History Month at architecture institutions as part of the Art+Feminism worldwide campaign. The event’s goal is to both improve Wikipedia’s content and address the gap in the written record about the impact of women, non-binary folks, and POC in heritage conservation, building science, landscape architecture, and architecture, and to recruit and train new editors. This year’s event, Architecture+Feminism 2020, will be the first Art+Feminism edit-a-thon held in Lubbock, the first at Texas Tech University, and the first at the TTU College of Architecture.

Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Recruit new editors, particularly women, POC, and non-binary participants.
  2. Increase skills for new and existing editors in Wikipedia editing.
  3. Add or improve content on 20th and 21st century women, non-binary, and trans architects, landscape architects, and preservationists in the English and Spanish Wikipedia.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

The event, entitled Architecture + Feminism, will include a pre-event training based on Art+Feminism's training materials, followed by a four-hour Edit-A-thon. This will be the third year of hosting Architecture+Feminism events by the organizers at Roundhouse Platform, who have previously hosted Edit-A-Thons at the University of Southern California, OTIS College, and artist-run space 2426 in Los Angeles; we hope to garner enough support to make it a yearly campaign during National Women’s History Month in the US, putting into action together two initiatives; to recruit and train new editors, and improve content on female and gender non-conformists architects, activists and scholars of the built environment. This year, we’ll be sharing our training materials and expertise in collaboration with our institutional partner, the Architecture Library at Texas Tech University College, a T1 research university and one of the nation’s leading Hispanic Serving Institutions.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

The event will be held on campus at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas in the Architecture Library. It will be advertised to the students, faculty, and surrounding community at large in the following ways:
  • Registration on the Wikipedia Outreach Dashboard and Art+Feminism.
  • Creation of Facebook event.
  • Creation of RSVP form.
  • Email notification through the  Roundhouse Platform listserv, Instagram and Facebook, and Website.
  • Email notification through the TTU COA Instagram and Website.
  • Email through departmental listservs for TTU’s MFA, M.Arch, B.Arch programs.
  • Email through student group listservs for TTU Women’s and Gender Studies, the Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Texas Tech Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, TTU Gender Equity Council, and Student Intersectional Leadership Council.
  • Printing posters and distributing flyers on TTU campus.
  • Printing posters and distributing flyers at art institutions in close proximity; CAST, LHUCA, & Lubbock Arts Alliance.
  • Discussing a partnership with the following student organizations; AIAS, CoA Dialogues, CROP, Knights of Architecture, NOMAS, and Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society.
  • Offering extra-credit for participating students.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

We will have two editors to lead a pre-event training, and at least two experienced editors available at all times throughout the event for help and feedback with participants.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We will provide the following equipment support systems for participants:
  • How To Edit Wiki Handout
  • List of Articles and Stubs to Work On
  • Architecture+Feminism Online Library (free to access digital articles, archival materials)
  • Architecture+Feminism Little Library (printed articles and bookshelf of hard copy books)
  • WiFi internet connections
  • Laptop and desktop computers available to borrow at the Library
  • Three (3) monitors (for screen-sharing)
  • Two (2) projectors (for group training and demonstration) We’ve asked participants to bring laptops if possible.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will follow up with participants via social media posts within three (3) days of the event, email correspondence within seven (7) days of the event, and a website post within fourteen (14) days of the event. The email to participants will distill relevant analytics information from the dashboard along with photographs documenting their work at the Edit-A-Thon. As part of the email, we’ll thank all who attended and include a link to a brief survey with questions about how to steer, shape and scale Architecture+Feminism into yearly event across the Southwest.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

First, to our knowledge, Architecture+Feminism is first and only Art+Feminism Edit-A-Thon held in Lubbock, Texas. Though this will be our first time organizing it in Texas, this will be our third year in a row of putting on the event Architecture+Feminism Edit-A-Thon, and we are hoping to set precedent for other like-minded educators, libraries, museums, and artist-run spaces, collectives, and collaborations to have yearly Wikipedia events in Lubbock and beyond. Second, we observe that architecture represents an important part of cultural production where “gender trouble” is severely pronounced, and, therefore, it is crucial and urgent to act upon it.

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

We hope to familiarize new publics with both the process of editing Wikipedia and with the powerful impact of gender in architecture practice and historiography. In line with the stated aim of making a significant contribution to gender discourse in architecture, we aim to engage at least thirty participants from Lubbock, to facilitate Wiki access to twenty new student editors, and create or improve twenty-five articles during the event.

These estimations are based on experience and data from our previous events. Since 2017, the total impact made by students of our edit-a-thons is as follows.

Resources[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

The Architecture Library at Texas Tech University is offering us an in-kind donation of space, seating, and WiFi for the duration of the event, as well as a committed team to support during the event and prepare carts of library materials to consult. Noémie Despland-Lichtert and Brendan Sullivan Shea of the group Roundhouse Platform, who are organizing the event, will provide academic sources, Wikipedia mark-up training and one-on-one support during the event.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

We hope to receive 675$ USD to cover drinks, snacks, and materials for 30 participants, transportation for 2 speakers, compensation for graphic design, and any requests for childcare during four (4) hour event.
  1. Food and canned drink = $200 ($6.66 x 30 people)
  2. Coffee = $25 ($12.50 x 2 bags)
  3. Supplies = $50 (name tags, markers printing costs, Art+Feminism buttons, etc.)
  4. Childcare = 100$ (25$ x 4)
  5. Editor Recruitment Campaign = $150 (Since the event focuses on promoting the visibility of women, POC, and non-binary creatives, we are asking for a stipend to set up a table on campus to attract broader visibility for the event and recruit new editors. We plan to set up a table by a different library each day of the week leading up to the editathon with volunteers handing out event promotional fliers, cookies, and swag to enhance recruitment efforts.)
  6. Speaker = $150 (transportation) (Since the event will map, document, and archive the creative practices of women, POC, and non-binary folks, we are hoping to invite two volunteer guest speakers to give context, talk about lack of representation, and shed light on ongoing research, practice, and activism on gender, sexuality and design. Dora Epstein Jones and Tania Gutierrez Monroy have both expressed interested in speaking, sharing their time and expertise. Dora Epstein Jones, the Chairperson at the Texas Tech University College of Architecture and author of many articles on architecture gender, sex, mobility and criticality. Tania Gutierrez Monroy, Visiting Instructor at LSU, and a Ph.D. candidate at McGill, whose research interests include space as a process, identity politics in sites of war, and gender & architecture. Gutierrez-Monroy’s dissertation examines women’s appropriation of the overlaps between domestic and war spaces during the Mexican Revolution.) Total = $675 USD
