Project Goal[edit]

- Create a pool of online MediaWiki content creators, editors, and translators
- Enhance MediaWiki skills for existing editors
- Bring localization of core MediaWiki from 57% to 100%
- Bring localization of the Mobile Frontend extension from 3% to 100% to ensure a mobile/smartphone friendly MediaWiki

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- We are planning to conduct an edit-a-thon whose mission is to create a pool of MediaWiki content creators, translators and editors, capable of creating an empowered knowledge society through creative commons content that fosters open knowledge sharing among communities.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
- We will have a call for applications drafted (in Google forms), once grant is approved. This will also be shared on our website, and social media platforms.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- We have a pool of 5 experienced Wiki trainers/ editors from our previous ICANNWiki Swahili project - sw.icannwiki.org(2016-2019) i.e Rebecca Ryakitimbo, Bonface Witaba, Matogoro Jabhera, and Maryanne Muriuki.
These trainers/ Wiki administrators helped with managing/approving Wiki users account requests, as well as reviewing and editing the ICANNWiki Swahili project articles/glossary/pages.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- Most of our target audience will be required to have basic MediaWiki editing skills. We shall draft a number of them from our pool of online community of contributors / editors.Further,a number of newbies (with no MediaWiki editing skills) will also be considered; these will be introduced to MediaWiki principles and best practices, as well as essential editing skills.
Last but not least,edit-a-thon fellows will be required to have excellent writing skills in both Swahili and English to be considered for the edit-a-thon.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- We have an online community where our previous Wiki alumni interact, continue to collaborate and share knowledge post event
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- This partnership with Wikimedia Foundation will act as a testing ground for future Wiki localization / edit-a-thon related events.
The sprint's success is thus paramount in helping us scale the initiative in partnership with other players such as institutions of higher learning, in both Tanzania and Kenya.
Impact[edit]
How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets: 1. 50 participants directly trained on MediaWiki software localization / editing, and continue to engage in future sprints 2. Localization of core MediaWiki software attains 100% translation milestone (from the current 57%) 3. Localization of the Mobile Frontend extension attains 100% milestone(from the current 3%)

Centre for Youth Empowerment and Leadership (CYEL), is a Not for Profit Organisation whose mission is to empower communities through Schools of Internet governance – SIGs, a series of Internet governance and digital policy capacity building programmes. CYEL is the brain child of ICANNWiki Swahili ( sw.icannwiki.org ), an initiative that seeks to translate and localize Internet Governance content (articles/glossary), into Swahili, for the 150 million speakers in East Africa . This critical online encyclopedic resource (Swahili Wiki) is built through regional edit-a-thons, capacity building workshops and Internet governance panels held throughout Tanzania and Kenya, in collaboration with stakeholders such as techies, and institutions of higher learning
