Ceslause/Wiki Loves Africa 2022 with Campus Photo Fest Nigeria
Campus Photo Fest Nigeria 2021 event has proven to have the capacity to gather over 1500 university students who have smartphones for a photo festival. You can view clips from this year's Photo Fest 2.0 here and here . I thought it fruitful to partner with the coordinator of the Campus Photo Fest Nigeria to get over 1500 of its attendees to media files to the Wiki Loves Africa 2022 international photo contest, files of African origin that can be used on various Wikimedia projects.
targetWikimedia Commons. Media files from Wiki Loves Africa has been found to be used across many language Wikipedia, like English, Igbo, Hausa, French, Spanish, and many more.

Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Introduce the Wiki Loves Africa project to new contributors of Wiki Commons, and share the Wiki Loves Africa vision with them.
  2. Recruit new editors and loyal photographers to Wikipedia and its sister projects.
  3. Engage existing editors/contributors to carry on in the contribution even after the Wiki Loves Africa contests.

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. What content will the contest focus on, and why is it important to your community?

Wiki Loves Africa 2022 with Campus Photo Fest Nigeria, will focus on shooting photos and videos, and making audio recordings under the theme "Home + Habitat". These files uploaded to Commons shall be used to illustrate Wikipedia articles on "Home + Habitat" in Nigeria and Africa, which is an opportunity for Africans to tell their own story.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

Yes, the Wiki Loves Africa 2022 international organizing team is in the know of this proposal.

3. How will you let participants know about the contest? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

There is a telegram channel for the previous participants of the Campus Photos Fest Nigeria, and Campus Photo Fest Nigeria will also post about it on their Instagram page. We'll also get Wikimedia Nigeria to post about it.

4. How will you judge the contest and award prizes?
Note: Grantees, judges, and other contest leaders are ineligible to receive prizes. Grantees who are serving as judges may not receive gifts through grant funding.

We'll have a panel of 3 professional photographers as judges, who will set criteria for best images, and use it to select winners for local awards.

5. For photo contests, what is the strategy to get images used on projects?

With this grant, we plan to go the whole nine yards. After the contest, participants will proceed to participate in the Wiki Loves Africa 2022 - Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos campaign, they will also participate in the Wiki Loves Africa 2022 ISA tool campaign to add proper captions and descriptions to the photos, to give them more encyclopedic value.

6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more:

For photo contests:

  1. Number of participants: 500+
  2. Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons:1000+
  3. Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects: 100+
