Project Goal[edit]
- Development of Arabic Wikipedia in quantity and quality
- Introduce Wikimedia & Wikimedia to unreached community
- Recruit new editors and encouraging experience editors to teach others through an advanced evaluation system
- Increase skills for existing editors
- Add and improve content (1500 articles by project's end and 3000 by end of 2018)
Project Plan[edit]
After achieving the targets of 2016 and 2017 by adding/improving of more than 3000 articles on arwiki, the program starts from January 2018 until the end of June 2018 (phase 1) and then from June to December 2018 (phase 2) with a 60 days periodic competition (first part ends in June,30). Every 30 days an initial evaluation is done and notes about the articles are published, to give participants the chance to do necessary corrections and to improve their articles before the periodic deadline of 60 days ends and the second detailed evaluation begins, which considers many quality factors and further optional improvements beside the scale of the content. Competitions in the first part of the projects:
- First competition: January & February
- Second competition: March & April
- Third competition: May & June
results of each competition will be archived and possible enhancements will be applied in every next part. The evaluation is done considering major acceptance requirements and many other additional factors. An overview of the a recent version of the concept (in Arabic) is given here!. An Example of the evaluation process might be seen here for Dec2017, which now will be extended due to new participation criteria shown in the image. Those criteria basically encourage participants for creating, improving or maintaining articles. The evaluation encourages participants to teach others, gives extra scores to the best 10 articles and considers the effort and quality of each article. Also suggested articles on our Homepage and Facebook page are highly scored, as we continuously suggest articles of high importance to the community & participants.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- Yes, the training is done in different scales:
- videos
- by sharing already created videos on creating and editing of wiki articles
- by sharing already created videos explaing important wiki tools like PetScan for querying
- Social Media: participants are also helped using a facebook teaching group beside Wikipedia pages (will be created by Feb/15, 2018)
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
- Our community knows well about the initiative since its begin in late 2015 and it has used the vidoes created and articles gathered for translation into Arabic. There is an internal arwiki page talks about the initiative and presenting its services. A member of the initiative has also been invited to give a presentation at Beir Zeit University (invitation link) about Wikimedia/Wikipedia & the DADD-initiative by the Palestinian representative of the Levant User Group (User:Fjmustak)(link1, link2, link3 and link4). Also User:TFlanagan-WMF, the manager of Wikipedia Education Programs with emphasis on the Middle East and North Africa programs, got to know about our project and he found it interesting and suggested us to apply for this grant.
- Articles provided by the initiative has been used in several educational programs in the middle east (basically in Palestine and Jordan and Egypt).
- Some members of DADD-INITIATIVE are members of usergroups Wikimedians of the Levant or another wiki initiatives such us wiki medicine or wiki woman.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- Yes, our team includes some well experienced editors beside me (Usernames: User:Sky xe, w:ar:User:Muhammad_Abul-Futooh, w:ar:User:Fatma_elzahraa2, w:ar:User:Marwa_Ahmed_Atia and User:Mohammad Hijjawi). One of them has the experience of leading the wiki educational program in Nablus-Palestine (User:Mohammad Hijjawi) and other like Fatma elzahraa2 has been mentioned in the wikimedia blog for their activity and articles quality (link). While the member Muhammad Abul-Futooh is one of the most active wikipedians on arwiki, wikidata and less on enwiki. The user Sky xe was active in involving the community by leading the DADD-INITIATIVE and by gathering almost 300k articles and classifying them on a webpage (arabicwiki.org) to help editors find articles matching their interest in an easy way. The articles have been all sorted based on the PagePile value in the beginning of 2018, to assure that most visited articles are listed first.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- Many participants have gained good editing experience and might participate easily. For new editors we build them up step by step using:
- self-created short, medium and high detailed videos
- using a complex evaluation approach to judge the articles score consndering new comers
- by publishing our notices on the articles and pointing all major mistakes and assure their avoidance in comming sessions.
- encouragement in the evaluation process by being less strict and by fixing some issues in their articles which might be difficult for them to solve and show them the way
- encouraging experience editors to teach new editors by giving them additional scores in the evaluation
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- by publishing their good work in community pages in form of posts or videos and by actively thanking them through their user pages on Wikipedia for their good work.
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- This support is thought to keep the successful DADD-initiative going and to release its members from carrying all the costs alone. The project will help to add new and improve poor important content of the Arabic Wikipedia and pointing out new ways of making editing easy but quality considering at the same time. The collections of categorized enwiki articles (approx: 300 Thousand sorted by PagePile) which are missing in arwiki helps many new editors to find suitable articles to start to write into Arabic. Also tens thousands of poor articles have been collected to help mainatiain articles that needs it necessarely (e.g.: articles without references, stub articles, auto-translation, etc.). All these articles are grouped and shown on the initiative webpage.

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events: 3 initial and 3 major online evaluations and competitions
- Number of participants: 100
- Number of new editors: 50
- Number of of articles created or improved: 1500 by end of June
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 50
Resources[edit]
What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- Currently no resources yet. In emergency case, if our grant is rejected (hopefully not), the members themselves will try their best to achieve the project. If we receive any support this year it will be used for the purpose of Wikipedia or its sister projects, which could mean some local activities to introduce the projects and share them as well.
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
- The awards in form of gift cards or books (in case of limited usage of gift cards in the winner's place) each 60 days: 10 winners competition (needed by the end of February/begin of March):
- $200 first place (gift cards/books)
- $100 second place (gift cards/books)
- $70 third place (gift cards/books)
- $60 fourth place (gift cards/books)
- $50 fifth place (gift cards/books)
- (up to $25) x 5 book prizes for the sixth to tenth place
- gift sending fees:
- 30$ to 50$ depending on the country the winners live in. In average: $40 per compition.
- Total costs: ($1935 = 3 x ($605 + $40)).

- The DADD initiative has done some really great job in attracting new editors and helping them along the way. Their past competitions have been very professional in the way they were scored.
