From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project Goal

We will be Recruiting new editors

Increasing skills for existing editors

and Adding or improving content

Project Plan Activities Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

This will be a single edit-a-thon to recruit new editors and improve the Wikipedia pages for North Carolina Newspapers

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

This event will be promoted through the Meetup page, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/North_Carolina_Newspapers ), our meet user group page (North Carolina Wikipedians), Social Media, and Library & University Communications calendar

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Danielle Colbert-Lewis (user No Misunderstanding), Therese Triumph (user thtriumph) will be leading the event and editors Stephanie Willen Brown (CogSciLibrarian) and Lisa Gregory (Wonderlag) will be co-leading the event. We also hope to put this out to our strong user group for those who wish to attend: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina_Wikipedians

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants will bring their own computers and work in teams to add content to Wikipedia. There will be a short “how-to” lesson on editing, a list of existing Wikipedia entries that need editing, information resources on the entries and experienced Wikipedian editors to help. 5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)? We will follow up with participants to access their experience of the event and invite them to other edit-a-thons hosted by UNC-CH and the NC Triangle User Group.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project? We are very excited to host another Edit-a-thon on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus to add to the knowledge of Wikipedia, especially information about our state. This event supports the mission of the Library and University by extending the knowledge base of UNC students and North Carolina citizens.

Impact How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

Number of events 1

Number of participants 20-35

Number of new editors 20

Number of articles created or improved 20

Resources What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We have a strong buy-in from the University Libraries staff, many of the library staff have hosted or participated in edit-a-thons before, and we usually have a wonderful turn-out from the students, faculty and the campus community. The Park Library and librarians has a wealth of knowledge about North Carolina newspapers and their historical importance which will be available to all participants.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

1. Pizza/snacks/drinks and paper supplies: $250

No other costs are expected to be needed for this event.
