Goals
[edit]Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
Detailed here are the results for each section of the project. We were not able to actualized some of the plans but the setbacks we encountered have been a great learning point for us to consider in our next projects.
Recruitment of New Editors | There were 9 new editors who have participated in the project and 14 old-timers |
Utilization of Lingua Libre and Spell4Wiki | 63.3 percent of the target audio recording was tracked |
Reach the 5,000th word | On May 2, 2022, we were able to reach the 5000th entry. User:42PerSpEx, a member of Wiki Advocates PH created the 5000th entry langkawas |
1st Central Bikol Wiktionary Birthday | On January 12, 2022, we have celebrated the 1st birthday of BCL Wiktionary. There are a total of 167 edits during the event. |
Development of existing page | The development of the page has only reached its initial design and has not yet been implemented on the page. This will be continued on the next phase on 2023-2024 project of the group. |
Frequency of contributions | There are several language groups contacted by the group but they have failed to send their contributions. The target languages for the next phase are Waray, Kapampangan, Maranao, Cuyunon, Aklanon, and Rinconada. |
Gather 50 audio recordings | At present, there are only 16 entries on Wikiboses page. For the next phase, we are looking at including prayers, chants, and incantations to be uploaded aside from the literary pieces contributed by the writers. |
Meet-ups for existing volunteers and new members | There are eight meet-ups conducted on the duration of the project. |
Skills Development training | The existing volunteers have showcased their abilities during the implementation of the Wiki Advocates PH Wikimania 2022 activity. |
Long-term strategic plan of campaign organizers | The plan was incorporated on the General Community Fund Request of the group. This will be implemented for the 2023-2024 activities. |
Follow-up with previous partners | The group was able to connect with different institutions and an upcoming partnership with the Saysay Bikol will be conducted this year. |
Review of best practices | Best practices was listed and consolidated. It was all considered during the drafting stage of the General Community Fund Request of the group. |
Outcome
[edit]Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation
Conduct 4 events | 6 events were conducted | A series of edit-a-thons were held, with each event focused on a different subtask. First up was an audio recording instruction for Language Libre and Spell4Wiki, followed by a tutorial on the fundamentals of editing for Central Bikol Wiktionary, a recording marathon for Lingua Libre and Spell4Wiki, and two sessions for the edit-a-thon. This involved both adding new words to the Wiktionary and using audio files with certain words. These events were held on January 8, January 18, February 5, and February 21.
20 participants to attend the events | 23 participants have attended the events | This was published on the Central Bikol Wiktionary community portal. Also, wikiprojects' local social media platforms in the Philippines posted this announcement. Some participants learned of the event through the announcement and some are directly invited by the old volunteers.
Gather 10 new editors | There are nine new editors for the project namely Virusnecross, Tinagoblumentritt, Maerui-sama, Roronoa Erica, Bal Pesino, Cjay Barrameda, Even Barrameda, Danbarrameda, and Daphpb. | These new editors are directly invited by Daramlagon, Brazal.dang and Kunokuno.
2,500 articles created or improved on Central Bikol Wiktionary |
|
During the Central Bikol Wiktionary Birthday, we were able to reach 2,272 words and on January 23, 2022 it counted to 2,750 words. By February 13, we were able to reach the 3000th entry and on February 25, the 3,500th entry. By May 2022, the target has already been reached. At present the Wiktionary has 5,298 words with some entries not yet being counted due to lack of categories.
upload 3,000 audio recordings using the Lingua Libre and Spell4Wiki application |
|
Here is the list of the tracked audio recording:
| ||||||||
10 repeat participants for each event | There are 16 repeat participants for each event. | Most of the participants have carry on with organizing and facilitating tasks for the success of the events. |
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
A better user interface of the Wikiboses | The design was not implemented but will be continued on the second phase. | The team has been able to only focused on the edit-a-thons and meet-up and failed to do follow-ups with the designer. There was also less participation from the prospect contributors so we were not able to go through the development of the project. |
A collection of 30-50 voices | There are only 16 contributions at present for the Wikiboses project. | It was less effective to do communications through email and facebook messenger. Mostly of the contributors decline submitting their pieces due to low audio quality while some have no proper device to use. We have also posted this as a contest but none was able to submit an entry until the deadline: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=478237823865486&set=pb.100064230724992.-2207520000. |
More pageviews of the landing page | There was only 601 pageviews to date. | The link was posted during the announcement of the contest on the Facebook page of the Literary Group, Pagsirang Inc. |
Free audio content from notable writers and artists in the Philippines and link them to their Wikipedia pages | There were only 16 contributors for the project. There are 6 langauges included for the pilot program, Albay Bikol, Bikol Central, Rinconada Bikol, Tagalog, Cebuano, and Hiligaynon. | Prospect contributors have failed to submit their entries. The contest was not executed due to lack of participants. |
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
60-90 total participants (i.e., 10-15 participants/session) | 28 participants have attended the sessions | We were not able to reach out to a wider audience due to time constraints and lack of volunteer time. |
20-40 unique participants in the entire funding period | There are only 18 unique participants. | Time restrictions and a lack of volunteer time prevented us from reaching a wider audience. |
Retention rate of 25% (4 new participants:1 will participate again in the next meetup) | There was only 5% retention rate. | New participants were not able to attend the next sessions, either lose of interests, conflict in schedule, or did not communicate to the next invitation. |

Learning
[edit]Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
The execution of an event is outlined in the plan. It covers all aspects of an event, including the start and end dates, the money, the location, the advertising, the participants, and more. Depending on the scale of the edit-a-thon, the scope and complexity of the event plan may change. It was not hard to change some details of the plan since we have been communicating regularly as a team, either through text messages or in person. While organizing the events, the date should be taken into account first. It serves as a permanent basis. Also, we have made an estimation of the attendance. These two important factors provided a framework for the other areas of our meet-ups and edit-a-thons. The experience of the past grantees and of the old-time Wikimedians has been a great asset to the success of the editathon, especially when hitting our target word entries for the Central Bikol Wiktionary.
- What did not work so well?
Admittedly, there are always a lot of factors beyond your control, such as inclement weather, apathy from potential partners and contributors, technical issues, and other unexpected setbacks. Since you cannot modify the other major parts of the plan, we have to account for any problems arising on the event's day or during the execution of the plan. Here are some setbacks we have encountered:
- Event: There are risks that we were not able to take into account, and we need to make some adjustments, especially in terms of manpower and budgeting.
- Budget: Some costs are underestimated and would require realignment. There was less time to do consultations since we are working on a tight schedule. There are also stores that have failed to issue official receipts but instead give a sales invoice o a note of the expenses.
- Venue: Edit-a-thons would require devices and a stable internet connection. While other venues have both of this, there are disturbances from other occupants of the area.
- Advertising: While advertising on social media appears to have reached an ample audience, only few have reached out to inquire with regards to the contests and the programs.
- Volunteers: There are a lot of volunteers who were available to do logistics parts of the event, but only a few are skilled in creating designs, doing write-ups, and completing the reports.
- Speakers: Mostly of the speakers were unable to travel to our area since it would take a total of three hours to accommodate the participants. Also, online meetings are not practical considering that the activities would require hands-on training.
- Attendees: Invitations were sent through emails, text messages, and letters but only a few participants were able to make it to the actual events due to conflict on their schedules
- What would you do differently next time?
While organizing and implementing the project, there are many things to keep in mind; therefore, it's crucial to make a list of everything our event management strategy has to include. Each of the organizers should be familiar with the purpose of the event, the objectives we expected to accomplish, the target goals, including the number of participants and the edits, the participants we expected, the backup plans for venues and programs, and the overall timetable of the events. On the budget aspect of the program, costs should be determined even before drafting the grant proposals. The old budget can also be a good starting point for making adjustments. The event pages should also include what time the events will happen, and in case things go wrong, there should also be a fallback date. There should also be consideration of whether the venue is ideal for the event and whether it can cater to the number of participants we anticipate. A specific point person should choose the necessary facilities, such as devices, wifi connections, and even restrooms. Since we also involve the youth as possible participants in our events, security is also a priority. A communication strategy for attendees will also be helpful to ensure their presence during the scheduled events. On editing, when veteran editors assist newbie editors, edit-a-thons work most smoothly. The best mentoring is one-on-one, but because we have a limited number of experienced editors, we should focus more on training more organizers to help out during the edit-a-thons. We have not encountered any IP blocking but it would be helpful next time to apply for an IP block exemption. What we have considered unsuccessful among the three scope of this project was the execution of the Wikiboses, but because of ithepotential for documenting the local languages and setting up a database of literary pieces and audio recordings, we will push through with developing it this year.
