Project Goal

[edit]

The WIkimedia Movement is such that when volunteers/stakeholders join they often get lost, lack proper guidance and mentorship to be able to navigate their way through the movement. Part of this problem is because such a thing does not exist. More often than not, volunteers or stakeholders will have to navigate their way through the movement on their own without proper coaching or mentorship. In their discovery journey, they realize they lack certain skills to be able to take up certain leadership roles or perform some other roles. Additionally, as much as regional hubs will want to expand and grow their network in newer communities, lack of these support systems often forces most of these volunteers to remain as editors and are not able to organize campaigns or take on other leadership roles due to lack of skills, coaching or clear guidance.

This project seeks to conduct research to build a holistic system which provides clear guidance and direction to aid volunteers and stakeholders who join the community to navigate their way through the movement. It also seeks to develop an online curriculum with the aim of boosting the capacity of both existing and new community members to acquire certain specific skills to enable them progress and enhance their work within the movement. These courses will be made accessible on platforms such as Moodle, Wired Tutor etc. Where members can take some of these courses to improve their skills where needed

This project is targeting Wikimedians in Africa. The reason for this is because the Africa community is one of the least explored communities within the movement with very huge potentials. If Africans are able to receive these kinds of mentorship and support, we believe that many more editors in Africa can grow beyond just being editors to recruiting and training new editors or perhaps organizing campaigns within their region. This will go a long way to help improve the narrative and bridge the content gap about Africa on the web through Wikipedia. Community members will learn about this project through our social media handles, African Wikimedia mailing list, etc We will be involving our community through:

1. A media drive, where we will storm media platforms and create awareness of the project

2. Updating the meta page purposely for the project

3. Creating a web page on our official website for the campaign that will entail all the details anyone will want to know about the project.

4. Organizing virtual workshops/office hours where we will inform people about the project

5. Sharing of information about the project on an all our major social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Whatsapp)

6. Employing partner countries to communicate with their networks and on their social media platforms.

  1. If you are organizing community discussions, what is your facilitation plan to support productive discussions around movement strategy implementation? Please also provide a link to a Friendly Space Policy that will be implemented to support these discussions. If you are not doing these activities, please write N/A.

Outcomes

[edit]

After your activities are complete, we would like to understand the draft implementation plan for your community. You will be required to prepare a document detailing this plan around a movement strategy initiative. This report can be prepared through Meta-wiki using the Share your results button on this page. The report can be prepared in your language, and is not required to be written in English.

In this report, you will be asked to:

  • Provide a link to the draft implementation plan document or Wikimedia page
  • Describe what activities supported the development of the plan
  • Describe how and where you have communicated your plan to relevant communities.
  • Report on how your funding was spent

Your draft implementation plan document should address the following questions clearly:

  • What movement strategy initiative or goal are you addressing?
  • What activities will you be doing to address that initiative?
  • What do you expect will happen as a result of your activities? How do those outcomes address the movement strategy initiative?
  • How will you measure or evaluate your activities? What tools or methods will you use to evaluate your activities?

To create a draft implementation plan, we recommend the use of a logic model, which will help you and your team think about goals, activities, outcomes, and other factors in an organized way. Please refer the following resources to develop a logic model:

Please confirm below that you will be able to prepare a draft implementation plan document by the end of your grant:
