Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- I will be organising one main editathon for now. I however have intentions to host subsequent events to ensure the growth of Kenyan community however this will be determined by the outcome from the first editathon.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
- I intend on informing my community through participation calls via school emails, social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and I will have interested parties register on the online platform that we will set up.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- Yes I have about 4 Wikimedia editors on the team, inclusive of myself, who will lead the event.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- The skills of the participants are varied as some of them have edited before through pilot training events I held in the past. A few of the targeted audience are new and have never contributed content onto Wikipedia, however the emphasis is to put these newbies in the same room with partly experienced contributors who can support them throughout the event as well as an opportunity for some of these old members to practice or sharpen their skills.
As for the resources, the event will be held in a computer lab hence those without laptops will have the option to use the school computers. There will also be free internet provided by the campus.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- A Facebook page will be created where the participants of the editathon will be able to post feedback and questions. There will also be a whatsapp group where participants will receive regular feedback and updates on upcoming events. Here, they will also be able to interact with each other more rapidly and hence keep track of each other's progress.
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- With this project I aim to alter the way my community perceives Wikipedia. This will not only promote open education but promote literacy too.
How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events: 1
- Number of participants: 45
- Number of new editors: 30
- Number of articles created or improved
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)
What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- Faith Mwanyolo a computer science student based in Nairobi (Riara University).
- Felix Nartey an experienced Wikimedian and contributor to the movement.
- Simeon Oriko an open advocate, longtime contributor to Wikipedia and a staff of Creative Commons.
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.
