Project Goal[edit]

Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".

  1. Add content on English and Twi Wikipedia (Biographies of At least 50 Scientists from Africa)
  2. Recruit educators and students as editors on English and Twi Wikipedia

Project Plan[edit]

The content of this project will be focused on English and Twi Wikipedia. We believe that Wikipedia belongs in education but very few educators and students from Ghana are involved as editors on Wikipedia. We want to involve students and lecturers from the Language Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology on English and Twi Wikipedia so we can train them to become editors of both the English and Twi Wikipedia. In the long run, we hope to establish a community of editors for the Twi Wikipedia to help increase the number of articles from 704.

We intend to organise two workshops, one for students and one for lecturers. After the workshop students and the lecturers will be allowed to contest for a month, writing articles mostly about Scientist from African countries. There are very few biographies about Scientist from Africa on Wikipedia. From our research, we have compiled a list of scientist who are not on Wikipedia but meet Wikipedia's notability criteria.

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

  1. An editathon and translation workshop will be held on April 6, 2020 to provide hands-on Wikipedia training for lecturers
  2. An editathon and translation workshop will be held on April 7, 2020 to provide hands-on Wikipedia training for students
  3. 30 full days from April 6 to May 6 shall be allowed for the period of the competition. (edits made at the editathons on April 6 and April 7 shall be considered valid entries)Qualified articles for the writing and translation contest will need to have a running text or readable prose size of 100 words or 500 Byte of characters with at least three references.
  4. Judges will use one week to clean up Wikipedia entries as well as to tabulate scores. Winners shall be announced and prizes awarded in the last week of May 2020

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

  • Global Open Initiative social media spaces
  • Wikimedia Ghana Usergroup mailing list
  • Wikimedians of Africa mailing list

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

We would create a Whatsapp group where we can share more resources with the participants and monitor their growth. We will also add them to our community group where they can share their questions and join the conversations we have concerning editing and using Wikipedia

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:

  2. Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects: N/A
