Goals[edit]
Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
- Yes! we did meet our goals and the project went very well as expected. We were very thrilled about the project's progress and the outcome.
- Since this local meetup was much more focused on localization, we reached out to multiple language communities and Wikimedia affiliates in Ghana in other to attract the expected number of participants we were expecting to partake in this local meetup. We did exceed this target to the extinct that we had to scale down the applicants in other to manage the events very well. The majority of participants were Wikimedia volunteers from Wikimedia language communities and Affiliates in Ghana. However, there were some participants from other Non-Wikimedia tech communities that did show up and participated in this local meetup and other non-Wikimedia contributors did also show interest in Wikimedia's future events including partnering up with Wikimedia to host Wikimedia technical events with their respective technical communities and tertiary institutions at large.
- Participants translated, reviewed, and worked on outdated translations on translate wiki and other Wikimedia projects including working on localization projects on Wikimedia incubator, specifically for Ghana Pidgin, which the total contributions for our localization project in multiple languages was over (500+ edits), A big thanks to Amir Aharoni for the support he gave us throughout this whole local meetup.

- What worked well?
- Our promotion and advertising went very well with the assistance of the Wikimedia Hackathon 2022 committee, as we attracted more than expected participants. The language communities in Ghana, Wikimedia Affiliates,non-Wikimedia technical communities, and tertiary students in Ghana expressed their interest in the local meetup and the Wikimedia hackathon main event through our promotion campaign and we had more than the expected participants.
- Participants found interesting ways to communicate together to come up with certain terminologies in their local languages to localize most of the Wikimedia tools and projects we contributed to through translatewiki and MediaWiki.
- Participants also had a pywikibot session led by Seyram Separty which helped the participants to acquire a new skill of how to contribute to pywikibot as a developer.
- The cooperation between the Wikimedia Affiliates, Language communities, non-Wikimedia communities and the University students and personnel worked well throughout the promotion campaign for the main event and the local meetup. We hosted a series of online meetings and a Q/A session to help the participants understand the use of the Wikimedia tools and how they could join the work adventure platform in other to participate in the main event and contribute to the local meetup.
- So far, some university students have shown interest to open a technical wiki fan club in their universities in other to host Wikimedia technical events and recruit more technical contributors from their various universities.
- The event was highlighted in a podcast here in Ghana.
- Volunteers translated [1] the various tasks on my user page in their languages which were also shared on their user pages respectively.
- What did not work so well?
The only issue we had was the participants that attended the event in person showing up a bit late, so we had to commence the local meetup 30 minutes before the actual time for both days. Next time, we will be setting up our event time 30 minutes before our actual event time in other for participants to show up on time.
- What would you do differently next time?
Keeping track of our participant's contributions was not that easy for us since https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org was not able to keep track of participants' contributions on translatewiki and MediaWiki. So we had to let the participants count their contributions individually in other for us to have the total contributions of every participant. We are looking forward to creating a tool to tackle this problem through a wikidata hackathon which will be organized by a wikimedian affiliate in Ghana.
