InterAccess Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes, the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon was very successful and reached the objective of increasing the visibility of women, female-identified, trans and non-binary artists working at the intersection of art and technology.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. We recruited new editors in Toronto, some who had never edited Wikipedia before, and saw some new faces in our space. We also had some existing editors join the event, who didn't have a chance to edit for a while and were happy to share their expertise. Editors shared common tools and tips between each other and found ways to help each other out. After the event it was clear that we improved the content and increased the visibility of many pages on Wikipedia for women, female-identified, trans and non-binary artists working in new media.

Recruit new editors in Toronto 6 participants of the event had never edited before It was a small group, but we managed to teach 6 new editors how to edit on Wikipedia so it's a small success.
Improve content and increase the visibility of women, female-identified, trans and non-binary artists working at the intersection of art and technology 17 pages of artists were improved New pages were not created due to the short timeframe of the event, however many pages were improved. This was a great exercise for new editors and was a good way to learn.


Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well? The best part of the event was putting together a great list of women/female-identified artists working in new media. We put together about 50 names and realized that so many were not included on Wikipedia.   • What did not work so well? The attendance was lower than expected. Even though we had close to 25 RSVPs, the weather was not in our favour so about 11 people showed up in total.
  • What would you do differently next time? I would arrange a partnership with a larger institution, such as the Ontario Art Gallery and host it in their space. They have a larger outreach than us and would be able to get a bigger crowd.
