Grants:Project/Rapid/Jamie Tubers/Ilorin Wikimedia Hub Bi-Monthly Workshops/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Report accepted
This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2017-18 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

This grant was gotten in order to ensure that when there are no major projects going on within the Ilorin Wikimedia Community, the community still gets to meet once in 2 months at least for a workshop or an edit-a-thon or both. As a result of this, the use of the grant didn't strictly follow the bi-monthly pattern, in order to avoid duplicity of activities, and also to ensure more efficient use of the funds, over a much longer period. However, the series of events have been very successful regardless.

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, we met all of our goals and even surpassed some of the targets.

In total, 4 events were organized, as planned. The events are Wikipedia Workshop/edit-a-thon, Wikidata Birthday + Workshop, and 2-day Developer Workshops. The latter two were major events in which we collaborated with Africa Wikimedia Developers to make it happen. Felix Nartey (the head of AWMD) and Perside Rosalie (A Wikimedia developer) were both present in Ilorin to coach participants in this relatively new aspect of Wikimedia. This has led to the establishment of a Wikimedia developer community in Ilorin (and in Nigeria at large). We are very happy and impressed with how we have utilized this grant for the local community overall.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Number of participants for each event: at least 20 An average of 29 participants attended each of the events.
Number of new editors for each workshop: at least 5 We had an average of 16 new participants at each of the events.
Number of articles created/improved on Wikipedia/Wikidata for each workshop: at least 10 articles/pages. An average of 39 articles were either created or improved in the two (2) wiki writing events. For the other two (2) developer events, it was mainly programming activities, and no wiki pages were created.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  1. Our aim to allow community members to bond and socialize worked really well, and the Ilorin Wikimedia community (including the Hub and the university club) now work hand in hand to make sure that the local community is continually engaged through the various activities organized successively from each end.
  2. All our targets for this grants were met, and this is mostly due to replicating and improving on some of the practices we continue to learn from organizing these types of events in the past, while trying not to make the same mistakes over again.
  3. Recruiting new editors and expanding the community has worked excellently, and we continue to record growing number of members, while maintaining a decent level of active community members.
  4. We have also been able to improve on our existing partnerships. For instance, the space which we regularly use for our workshops have decided to take off the running costs of our events, so all we need now is to just pay the discounted venue fee, and no need to bother about backup power costs and so on.
  • What did not work so well?
  1. Timeline: This grant was supposed to serve a mid-time goal. However, rapid grants is a short-term grants, hence, there's been needs to postpone the deadline for the conclusion of the grant. This doesn't work so well, cos I imagine that it does affect Wikimedia grants' team record-keeping schedules.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  1. In next grants (of this nature), we'll try to apply for grant programmes, that fit the timeline needed for appropriate execution.
