This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2017-18 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes. I had applied for a editathon on Jan 6th and 7th. We could recruit 19 new editors during this editathon. However as we could conduct the event at a lesser budget that initially projected, I again requested for a follow up editaton and after getting approval conducted second editaton on 17th and 18th February. The details are available at event page

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
1 event 2 events We could conduct the 1st editathon at a lesser budget. This is because all the concerned parties charged at a concessional price, as it was for a Philanthropic cause. With the remaining budget we conducted a 2nd editathon
25 participants 22 participants Since the editathon was held first time at Shivamogga, the awareness was low
22 new editors 19 new editors Since the editathon was held first time, the awareness was low. We conducted the editathon in college. During the 2nd editathon, surprise test was conducted. So many students could not participate in the event
15 new articles 10 new articles Since most of the participants were new to Wikipedia, a lot of time was consumed for the training. However the new participants will contribute more in the coming days.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

This was my first experience at organizing an editathon. And this was first event of Wikipedia at Shivamogga. Even then I could enroll the college to provide premises and bring in 19 new editors. Participants were very enthusiastic to learn the editing skills. One of the participant even took on the work to organizing an editathon at his department in Kuvempu University.

  • What did not work so well?

Even though the participants were enthusiastic in participation, the out come in terms of new articles was very low. They were lacking in choosing the topic as well as doing proper research. Even though the 2nd editathon was planned in consultation with the college, there were no repeat participants as there exam was approaching. We did not gave wide publicity for the 2nd editathon, believing that there would be many repeat participants. Since there were no repeat participants, the attendance was low in 2nd editathon.

  • What would you do differently next time?

We focused mainly on students. Next time we would try to involve more diverse group of participants. Also slowly a group of wikimidians who contribute regularly needs to be created
