Krishna Chaitanya Velaga/VIVA-VVIT Edit-a-thon
This edit-a-thon is primarily based to recruit editors from the two educational institutions under Social Education Trust i.e. Vasireddy Venkatadri Institute of Technology and VIVA (The School). It'll serve as the boot camp to graduate the VIVA-VVIT Wikimedia Community which is in incubation. After the edit-a-thon a subsequent photo-walk has been planned as a part of WLM 2017 in India, please also review the grant application of WLM India 2017 Vijayawada Photo-walk subsequently.

Project Goal[edit]

  1. Recruit new editors: Expected 60–100
  2. Increase skills for existing editors: Though this edit-a-thon doesn't really target this goal, if any editor participates, his/her skills would improve.
  3. Add or improve content: 30–50 articles to be created, 120–200 images to be uploaded

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

This events comprises of a series of three edit-a-thons for three weeks.
  • During Week 1 (1–2 hrs); interested students from VIVA and VVIT who wish to contribute to the Wikimedia movement will be assembled at a notified place. Here the participants will be guided to create their accounts and basic introduction is given.
  • During Week 2 (3–4 hrs); the participants will be introduced to the working of Wikipedia in detail, the Foundation, the Wikimedia Chapter (India) etc. At least 120 articles that are need to be created within the scope of India will be listed by the organizers, and then the participants will be given a chance to choose an article of their own interest. Soon they'll start preparing the draft and simultaneously they'll be introduced to the guidelines of editing, the policies etc. The users shall continue to work on their draft even after the event.
  • During Week 3 (Main event) One full day; Resource person(s) will preside over the event, and in-depth coverage of topics will be done. Users who develop their article and make it ready to be published will be given a certificate.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

Although this event is primarily targets the students of VIVA and VVIT, interested candidates from outside may join in. On campus promotion will be done through college notification center and the local mailing list will be notified.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes, the the management of Social Education Trust have agreed to provide the venue and infrastructural facilities free of cost in support of the edit-a-thon. If needed prior filtration of participants will be done during Week 1 to make sure that they can contribute quality content even to an acceptable extent initially.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

As this event spreads across three weeks, the participants are expected to publish their articles at the end of the third week. To motivate the editors, certificates and small trophies will be awarded for exceptional performances. Even after this, immediate steps will be taken to form the User group officially which will in turn take care of the editor engagement.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project is supported by Wikimedia India is every aspect ranging the providing content for edit-a-thon to resource persons, and also the management of Social Education Trust are very keen to support Wikimedia movement, even in future. This will serve as a boot camp for various events such as Hack-a-thons, Train the Trainer Programs, Media Wiki Training sessions etc.

All the infrastructural facilities including the venue to conduct the edit-a-thon will be provided at free of cost by the Social Education Trust. Posters from the event MOC 2017 will be used.
