From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
statusfunded
Edriiic/Nigeria Transportation and Recreation Expedition
This is an onsite project where every participant will be taught how to create and improve the content on Transportation and Recreational centers in Nigeria on Wikivoyage and Wikipedia. There is a substantial lack of content in Nigeria's transportation facilities and recreational centers that deserve a stand-alone article both on Wikivoyage and Wikipedia. Few other experienced Wikimedians and I will use the project to introduce Wikivoyage and Wikipedia to existing Wikimedia editors and new editors utilising the knowledge we have acquired in the past few years. Nigeria transportation and recreation expedition (#NGTransportandRecreationExpedition) will help bridge the transportation and recreation center content gap that exists on Wikipedia and Wikivoyage with a focus on Nigerian-related content; this event will bring together different Nigerians, both new and old Wikipedia users, to improve and create content on the transportation and recreational centers we have in Nigeria.

Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.
The Nigeria Transportation and recreation Expedition edit-a-thon is aimed at covering the Nigerian transportation and recreation centres content gap on Wikivoyage and Wikipedia, we aim to:

  1. Add and improve transportation and recreation centre related content in Nigeria on Wikivoyage and Wikipedia.
  2. Improve the presence of Wikivoyage in Nigeria through Nigeria transportation and recreation expedition.
  3. Recruit new Wikivoyage and English Wikipedia editors
  4. Engage and Increase skills for existing editors: by writing independent articles about different Nigeria transportation and recreation centres
  5. Add photo content relating to transportation and recreation centres in Nigeria on Wikimedia commons and using some of the photos to improve existing or new articles on Nigeria’s transportation and recreation centres.
  6. To cover the transportation and recreation centre gap on Wikivoyage and Wikipedia since quite a number of transportation facilities and recreational centres in Nigeria do not have a stand-alone page on Wikipedia.

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are planning on hosting two physical edit-a-thon accompanied with a week online session that focuses on creating and improving articles on Nigeria’s transportation and recreation centres.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I intend to notify members of the Wikimedia Community in Nigeria via the official Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Facebook page.
I have also approached the Don Bosco Youths Iju branch for collaboration, they have huge amounts of youth that have shown interest in joining the wiki movement. I will notify them via their official WhatsApp group.
I will also notify my university community members at the Wikimedia Fan Club, Lagos State University via our official WhatsApp and Telegram groups.
With the help of Wikimedians from Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, Yoruba Wikipedia, and the Yoruba Wikipedia Community Portal.
I intend to use social media to select participants for the event.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

I plan to create publications and announcements on social media to inform users of the public willing to participate in the event.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.

Yes, I have experienced Wikimedians from the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation and from Wiki Fan Club, Lagos State University who are interested in collaborating with me on this project. We will also put in place edit instructions for new wikimedians.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes, the event is designed to accommodate prospective participants with working devices necessary and required to create articles.

Internet will be provided at the venue for the participants at the training. Internet support will be provided to the participants for the online session and continuous editing. Experienced Wikimedians will be available to guide the prospective participants throughout the entire period of the event on how to produce quality content.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Participants will be onboarded to the project via WhatsApp to engage/mentor participants on issues related to content created during the event. The WhatsApp community created during the project will still be active and participants engaged after the events
Participants will also be added to the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation mailing list for smooth communication of future projects through the mailing list

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Endorsements[edit]

Community members are encouraged to endorse your project request here!

  • I support this project because it is needed and would be useful to the wiki community. InehGabrielAgha (talk) 10:38, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Transportation is a key aspect of human daily living, and this project will be a very good one in expanding it's scope.Justmee3001 (talk) 11:04, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
  • This is going to be a great project looking at the fact that transportation is a very big sector that needs lots of verified information in a global space like Wikipedia. I endorse this project without a doubt that it would be a great one. Benbeezy (talk) 12:25, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Strong support Strong support I look forward to the actualization of this project especially owing to the fact that the Wikivoyage project is not widely used in Nigeria like the Wikipedia, so the project can help to train and recruit more Wikivoyage volunteers. B.Korlah (talk) 10:31, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Support SupportStrong support Strong support Looks good to me, and I'd like more expeditions going on at Wikivoyage. I do hope this improves many of our Get in and Get around sections of our articles about Nigeria. I'm presuming that there'd be even more happening on Wikipedia as well :) SHB2000 (talk | contibs) 08:08, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Support Support. The recent Nigeria Expedition on Wikivoyage generated a lot of content for Nigerian travel articles, and most of the editors were willing to learn about what content is appropriate for Wikivoyage and about editing according to Wikivoyage style. Ground Zero (talk) 12:40, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Support Support this effort to correct and expand information in Wikivoyage about Nigeria. I hope that the organizers will also encourage putting some information into Wikidata (e.g., creating and expanding Wikidata entries for public transit systems in Nigeria), so that it is easier to share between the different languages of Wikivoyage. WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:14, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

Follow up[edit]

  • The Nigerian editors have created many new Wikivoyage articles, and added a lot of new content. Wikivoyage's coverage of Nigeria has been significantly improved. I think this was an excellent investment of the Wikimedia Foundation's resources. Ground Zero (talk) 12:10, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
