Goals
[edit]Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes, I met my goals. The project was a success as many persons were introduced to Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia and Wiki Commons. Beyond this, lots of contents were also added to Wikipedia to bridge the content gap on Edo related articles on Wikipedia. In fact, during the project`s lifecycle, a total of 130 Wikipedia articles were improved/created. So yes, I am happy with the how the project went and with the results achieved.
Outcome
[edit]Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.
Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
One training + One Edith-a-ton | One training + One Edith-a-ton | It should be noted that while we had one physical training, there were also series of online training and mentorship to ensure the participants understood the basics of Wikipedia editing |
30 participants | 60 participants | The total number of participants who participated in the event were more than we earlier anticipated. In the end,[60] people participated in either or both of the events. |
25 New Editors | 50 New Editors | Majority of the participants for this project were newbies. They have always been consumers but not creators of content in Wikipedia. Consequently, we had to run several sensitization/awareness campaigns before the date of the physical training. In addition, we also made sure over 90% of the participants created their Wikipedia account before the date of the physical training. See the link above |
Number of articles created or improved = 20 | Number of articles created or improved = 130 | The project surpassed the target for the number of articles created or improved. It should also be noted that while 20 new articles were created, a total of 130 articles were either created or improved during the project`s lifecycle . Details of the project metrics can be accessed [here] |
Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events):10 | Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events):over 30 | Over 30 participants participated in the training and edit-a-thon. See the link above |
Learning
[edit]Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well? The use of a combination of several media (social media, fliers and banner etc.) increased awareness of Wikipedia training in the University. In fact, some members of the University`s management team were excited about the project and were also present during the physical training. Secondly, I trained some selected participants with good IT skills on the basics of Wikipedia editing prior to the date of the physical training. The trained participants were very helpful during the physical training as they assisted in attending to some of the participants who always required a one-on-one attention. Given the increase in the number of participants, it would have been difficult for the facilitators to attend to all participants who needed one-on-one attention.
- What did not work so well? We had more participants than we anticipated. We had to close the registration early so as to effectively manage the event. Secondly, we had network challenge during the physical training and edit-a-thon. We had to switch among different Internet Service Providers in the country during the training and this disrupted the flow.
- What would you do differently next time? I will make plans for alternative internet service during training to minimize disruptions since it is evident that poor internet service is a perennial issue in many parts of Nigeria. Secondly, prior to organizing major training, I will ensure we have adequate support in terms of skilled manpower as this will reduce the workload on the team. I am using this opportunity to propose the establishment of a Wiki Fan Club in Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Nigeria. I believe the creation of this fan club will help greatly in increasing the number of skilled manpower in Edo State and in Nigeria. I have already communicated this plan to the University management and will also communicate the Wikimedia Community in Nigeria.
Finances
[edit]Grant funds spent
[edit]Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on. The breakdown of the expense for this project can be accessed [here]
Remaining funds
[edit]Do you have any remaining grant funds? Yes. I have USD 53.03 left. I propose to add the remaining fund to my next project. I intend to submit grant application for my next project in the coming months.
Anything else
[edit]Anything else you want to share about your project? The project was an eye opener for most of the participants. The project also helped improved the Information Literacy Skills of some of the participants. Through this project, I was exposed to more content gap about Edo State related Wikipedia articles. For instance, I came to know, through this project, that a good number of Edo related Wikipedia articles lack photos/images, including the new articles created.
