Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes, we are happy how it went and met the goals. The project all together went well although the situation in New York was quite difficult. It was the begging of Corona and people´s problems and topics shifted. Using zoom meant to also have people online taking part. All together we had 20 participants, 9 were there, 11 took part online. We had 9 completely new editors, 1 with some experience and 10 experienced editors. What was really great about the project was that nobody was negative. I expected some difficulties with other wikipedians but that did not happen. Also men took part and everybody thought the issue is rather important.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. The Un-conference was scaled down. It was not allowed for NGO´s and governmental delegations to take part. The positive effect of this situation was that the German delegation was holding together and our event became a much bigger issue. They were all very interested and very excited about the way Wikimedia movement is going to by supporting this topic. Also they were interested in the idea of open knowledge and transparency supporting women in technical fields. As women politicians do face harassment themselves they could all easily relate to our topic. We had good talks and older as well as young women from India and Ghana who now want to work on Wikipedia. Altogether it was a great experience of not being alone with this topic and be in solidarity with women and men. Here's the Dashboard for the event.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Recruit new editors 9 new editors We also had experienced editors taking part.
Increase skills for existing editors Experienced editors improved their skills on the topic. Existing editors realized the importance of the issue and want to take more care of it.
Add or improve content (numbers from the Dashboard) 17 articles created, 478 articles edited, several images uploaded (not all of them habe been counted in the dashboard, they are in the category Online harassment) We had 9 completely new editors, 1 with some experience and 10 experienced editors.
Improve human rights in wikipedia Knowledge on human rights was improved as awareness on the topic was created. We experienced a positive attitude towards the project from the community.
Create awareness for politicians and governmental decision makers The German delegates understood why the topic is important. They want to help creating a safer online environment for women.
Bring open knowledge to UN-Delegates Participants attending changed their mind on open knowledge realizing that it is related to democracy. Un-Women delegates were shocked about realizing that women are that underrepresented in Wikipedia.

They could see the importance to change this.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

It worked well having new and experienced editors. The mixture of having a local event near the UN-headquarters and also online on zoom worked well even though there is the time difference. People in Germany stayed awake to take part. That was amazing and surprising.

  • What did not work so well? There was too much work for me as a single person as our team was divided to half because of Corona. One person (Karoline Klose) stepped completely out of the project because her family was ill.
  • What would you do differently next time? I would do such a big project with a bigger organizer team. Also I would not do everything myself as the introduction, support, organization and technical work as well as taking care for drinks and wellbeing.
