Project Goal[edit]

  1. Recruit new editors
  2. Increase skills for existing editors
  3. Add and improve content

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are hosting one editathon, which will include training. Leading up to the editathon, we are providing extensive training to a group of students who will be prepared to review Wikipedia's pillars and core tenets with attendees and teach them how to edit and troubleshoot technical issues.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

The editathon is registered on the Wikipedia Outreach Dashboard and with Art+Feminism. We have publicized the event to all University students, faculty, and staff via the University's email announcement bulletin. We will publicize it several more times using this system before the editathon. In addition, the event is on the Library's event calendar as well as the University's. At this time, we have four professors who are requiring their students to participate in the editathon. We will be posting flyers at two local public libraries and sharing the flyer with several other colleges and universities within driving distance.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Yes, we will have at least six experienced Wikipedians available.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes. We have more than 30 desktop computers and 50 laptops reserved for participants. We also have excellent WI-FI available in the Library building, where the event will take place. Plus, we have millions of books and electronic resources that participants can use as they prepare their articles.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will thank participants on their Talk pages after the event and invite them to continue editing. We will also run a survey to learn what went well, what could be improved, and gauge interest in future editathons.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

We estimate we will have 50-75 participants.

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 1
  2. Number of participants: 50
  3. Number of new editors: 30
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: 60

Resources[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We have 6 experienced Wikipedians who will organize the event and provide training and one-on-one support. Library staff will be available to help coordinate resources. The venue, technology, and WI-FI are provided free of charge.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  1. Food and drink = $375
  2. Childcare = 4 hrs x $20 x 3 caregivers = $240
  3. Supplies (name tags, etc.) = $75

  • Ms. Pratesi is very enthusiastic about the editathon and about the university credit course she's launching this semester that deals with crowdsourced information sources, of which Wikipedia is easily the most prominent and thus will be the primary focus of the class. Ms. Pratesi has been recruiting people to take part in this event for months already. In fact, I believe she talked to me about it as far back as September or October 2017. • This is an important project that will impact many students on our campus as well as the general public. This is the first project of its kind on our campus, and there is enthusiastic support from many stakeholders. Multiple faculty are incorporating the project into their courses, so it will be directly tied to student learning.

This grant will enable the project coordinators to provide refreshments and, most importantly, childcare at the signature event associated with the project. This will allow many to attend who otherwise would not be able to, in keeping with the goal of diverse representation and voices present in the project. 134.161.254.128 21:28, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

  • A great project to bridge disciplines and social groups on campus ... and to develop a better and less adversarial understanding of Wikipedia and cooperative information building and archiving.

  • Angela has an excellent understanding the importance of credible sources and providing unbiased factual information. This will be an excellent opportunity for students and community members to learn more about how Wikipedia articles are created and maintained. Those who participate will gain a better understanding of the importance of the Wikipedia community, and will provide high quality information and citations to Wikipedia articles. 134.161.29.109 16:02, 24 January 2018 (UTC)
