Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed. Many GLAMs have published openly licensed materials (photos, artworks) on their websites but the same are not reflected on WikiCommons. Our Editathon series aims to identify images and artworks from India that are currently missing from Wikipedia and add them to Commons and Wikipedia articles. We aim to:

  1. Make our community aware about licenses and introduce them to Commons
  2. Populate Commons with pictures from GLAMs that pertain to India
  3. Illustrate Wikipedia pages with material from GLAMs
  4. Spread information about the resources created within the project
  5. Make openly licensed images easily findable by adding them to relevant categories

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

To commemorate World Heritage Day (April 18), we will conduct a week long Commons Editathon. We will conduct two training sessions followed by the Editathon.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

NA

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

The Heritage Lab has an engaged social media community across platforms including Instagram through which we will primarily get the word out in addition to our newsletter which reaches 2500+ subscribers. We also run two websites: The Heritage Lab; THL Open since its launch in Jan 2022 has already got more than 1,00,000 views. We will run banners on both websites to promote the event. We will also reach out to our academic partners (institutes / universities) for participation.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT

We hope to lead this event online; User:DesiBoy101 and User:Medhavigandhi both co-leads on this project are experienced with editing Wikipedia and uploading to Commons.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

During the week of 19-24 April, we will conduct two trainings on Commons Uploads and the OpenGLAM project. Our community does have access to laptops and internet connection so we would be able to conduct online sessions. Necessary skills would be imparted in the training. We will also provide the participants with a task list featuring GLAMs and collections related to India that are published online with open licenses.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

  1. We will form a Telegram Group to keep our community updated on OpenGLAM material on WikiCommons, sending them one image daily
  2. We will continue to host similar monthly commons editathons and other OpenGLAM reuse sessions.

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Completely online

8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Even though our immediate community is comprised of art, culture and history enthusiasts, awareness about open-licenses, re-use of OpenGLAM material and findability of openGLAM material remains a challenge. Through this editathon, we hope to make a beginning towards a series of meaningful exchanges and community activities around OpenGLAM using WikiCommons as our main platform.

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events - 1
  2. Number of participants - 20
  3. Number of new editors - 15
  4. Number of images uploaded - 200+

Resources[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We have a list of GLAMs that have open licensed content from India that is currently missing from Wikimedia Commons. This will used by the organizers to facilitate the editors during the editathon so as to populate Commons with relevant content.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  1. Food vouchers : INR 300/- per person (22) = INR 6600/-
  2. Best Team Prize : INR 10,000/-
