Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, we met all of our goals and even surpassed them.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
At least 1,000 quality articles about African cinema and arts have been created on Wikipedia. A total of 4,297 articles were created during the period of the contest; thousands more were improved upon. This is the highest number of articles recorded so far in the contest for its 4 years of run.
At least 5 African communities/Affiliates organize productive Wiki-events at the local level. Wiki-events were organised in at least 5 countries
We have significantly improved the awareness level of Wikimedia movement in Africa, through our publicity efforts We believe that we've upped the awareness level of Wikimedia/Wikipedia through our social media engagement, publicity work and media coverage such as: 1, 2, 3 and 4.
The jury is able to successfully assess entries and unanimously decide the international winners for each prize category of the contest. All entries have been adequately assessed and winners decided on.
All international winners have been successfully contacted and received their deserved gifts. All winners have been duly contacted and the disbursement of prizes is concluded.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  1. Our communication plan really worked well, as we were able to achieved a higher level of engagement and participation across the board.
  2. All our targets for this contest were met, which were mostly due to replicating and improving on some of the practices we learned from the previous editions, while trying not to make the same mistakes.
  • What did not work so well?
  1. Getting more language communities included in the contest beyond the regular participants. Future contests should try to focus on this expansion.
  2. Although better than last year, the jury process was still very cumbersome due to the scale of participation. However, the refinement of the process will always be a constant work in progress, especially if the contest continues to grow.
  3. Giftcards are still complicated, but they remain the least complicated of all non-cash gifts possible. However, we made better use of local Wiki groups to deliver some of the vouchers issued this time around.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  1. We are looking into a more stable jury process that is capable of reviewing articles in all languages, based on the metric of the contest. However, this idea has not been thoroughly developed.
