Grants:Project/Rapid/WBG/Wiki Exploration 2021
Project Goal
[edit]Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".
The exploration project involves photo-documentation of less documented built heritage structures of which includes mostly more than 150 to 200 year old brick built temples and other similar structures in the total state of West Bengal. Like the past four years, this project will be undertaken on behalf of West Bengal Wikimedians User Group. These structures form an important part of heritage of West Bengal and many of them are rapidly decaying as there is not much effort to conserve these structures. These temples have terracotta motifs on their wall which showcases have almost no presence on Wikimedia Commons or other Wikimedia sites. Also, there are other historically important built heritage structure like mansions and other important structures in the vicinity which also needs to be documented. This project will enrich the image bank of Wikimedia Commons and relevant images will be used in Wikipedia articles in due course of time.
Project Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?
- The project of documenting heritage built structures of West Bengal has been subdivided district wise. My base will be at Kolkata from where I will travel to different district, make temporary base there and conduct exploration in the relevant districts. With the help of district maps and local contacts, I will trace down the structures and photograph them in detail. My fellow team members will help me in coordinating with local contacts, preparing the route maps and keep tracks of structures documented.
How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?
- West Bengal Wikimedians User Group has been informed of this project officially here and I will conduct the exploration on behalf of the group.
- West Bengal community has been notified at the mailing list.
What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
- I will have submitted around 10,000 relevant images to Wikimedia Commons. The other team members (at the most two, mostly just a single person) will mainly be involved in providing support service to my documentation work. The user group will be helping to create structured data about the monuments on Wikidata, which will be eventually included on Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in India.
Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:
- This project involves myself and at the most one or two person. No gathering of 10 or more person is involved. We'll follow local health guidelines, as mentioned in #1, and #2 of the risk-assessment protocol.
Impact
[edit]How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:
- Number of total participants: 3 people (max.) directly as part of exploration along with 2 more people from WBG to build structured data on Wikidata
- Number of photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (if applicable): 10000 +
- Number of photos used on Wikimedia projects (if applicable): 5-10%
