Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Recruit new editors to contribute to Wikipedia articles related to psychology, education and chemistry.
  2. Increase skills for existing editors.
  3. Add or improve Wikipedia content in Spanish.
  4. Encourage interest in contributing to open initiatives such as Wikipedia.

Project Plan[edit]


Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are planning a series of editathons focused on increasing and improving the number of Wikipedia articles in Spanish, related to psychology, education, chemistry and more during the Open Education Week (March 2-6, 2020). Participants will be mostly university students, lecturers and researchers from four Mexican institutions, Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (UANL), University da Vinci (UDV, fully online university), La Salle University (ULSA, Oaxaca campus) and the University of Guadalajara (UDG). We will provide training before and on the day of the editathons. We will also organize four talks on open knowledge and Wikipedia to raise people's interest in the editathons. During the editathon sessions, we will have mini-contests for people that do the most edits (a prize per session). Event organisers will not participate in these contests.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

We will use four main strategies.
  1. Personal invitations. We will personally invite students and academics who have participated previously in our editathons (Wiki FaPsiUANL and Wiki Universitarios + Wiki UANL + Wiki FaPsiUANL). In the institutions that are participating for the first time, we will try to associate editathons with specific courses (ie, students taking specific courses will be invited to participate).
  2. General invitations. We will have some posters around the different universities to extend the invitation to everyone. Also, in Oaxaca, we will invite people who speak indigenous languages (such as Mixe), even if they are not part of the university, so they can help document information in their languages.
  3. Social media. We will promote the events on Facebook, Twitter, institutional blogs and whenever possible, on the websites of the participating institutions.
  4. International platform. Since the event will take place during the Open Education Week, we will use its website for promotion.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Some people who participated in our past editathons (Wiki FaPsiUANL in 2017 and Wiki Universitarios in 2019) will join us and help, including BrendaPadilla3, Zanzamar7 and Susydelagarza. We will also be using the training videos created by WikiUNAM.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants will be university students, researchers and lecturers. We expect most of them to be knowledgeable in their academic interests but new to Wikipedia editing. Some will have some experience as editors, as they participated in our previous editathons (Wiki FaPsiUANL in 2017 and Wiki Universitarios in 2019). We hope they can help others. At UANL, I (BrendaPadilla3) will be guiding the events, with the help of Susydelagarza and others. At UDG, Zanzamar7, who participated online in Wiki Universitarios in 2019 and is a lecturer, will help with the organization. At ULSA, so far we do not have a person knowledgeable in Wikipedia who can help. We do have some people interested in learning more about this initiative and willing to engage others with it. In this case, we are considering training someone who is originally from Oaxaca but studies at UANL, so they can go there to help in person and also, to deliver a talk on openness (we hope this counts as local travel as it is within the same country).
Participating institutions will provide suitable spaces for the talks on open knowledge, the trainings and the editathons, ensuring Internet access and computers for participants. At UANL, we will reuse the equipment we got last time (ie, portable modem, wifi repeater, voltage converters & extension cords). We will start each editathon with a quick training session. We will have help sheets and FAQs. Staff and volunteers will be available to help. UDV will provide Zoom rooms, where participants will be able to seek support online.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

After the editathon, we will publish an overview of the event in the institutional blog of the Faculty of Psychology, UANL. We will email editors to thank them for their participation and encourage them to keep contributing to Wikipedia.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

It all started in 2016. As part of a course assignment, Master-level students at UANL’s Faculty of Psychology contributed to Wikipedia. In December 2017, with the support of Wikimedia Foundation we involved other graduate students, lecturers and researchers in an editathon (Wiki FaPsiUANL). In 2019, the initiative grew. We organised another series of editathons, this time, pairing them up with the Open Education Week. Other faculties joined in, as well as the University da Vinci (Wiki Universitarios + Wiki UANL + WikiFaPsiUANL). Now, two more institutions have joined in, which is exciting and a bit scary at the same time (coordination might be a challenge). We will connect online. Another institution might join in (but will not be part of this application and will have to obtain funds through different means). I am not part of any particular Wikipedian group, nor are the other people who help as far as I know.


How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 14 (4 talks about openness and Wikipedia, 4 training sessions, 4 editathon sessions, 1 planning session, 1 wrap-up session)
  2. Number of participants: +100
  3. Number of new editors: +80
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: +100
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)


What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

Each participating institution will provide a suitable space with Internet access and computers for participants, and support the events before the editathons (training sessions and talks about open knowledge and Wikipedia). UDV will provide Zoom rooms. We will reuse the equipment we got for a previous editathon (ie, a wifi repeater, voltage converters & extension cords) and the materials we used (help sheets, slides, videos).

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  • Food & drinks = 7,000 MXN | 363.64 USD
  • Travel from Monterrey to Oaxaca to support an editathon and deliver a talk on openness= 6,000 MXN | 311.69 USD (if this is not fundable any more, we will exclude it from the budget and try to manage with online support)
  • Book gift cards to recognize exceptional volunteer contributions (winners of mini-contests) = 2,000 MXN | 103.90 USD
  • Miscellaneous supplies (name tags, markers, paper, etc.) = 2,000 MXN | 103.90 USD
Total = 17,000 MXN | 883.13 USD
