Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Wikimedians of Benin User Group organized, as internationally, the second edition of the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos competition. Thanks to our local community, we have achieved our goals. The contributions made it possible to improve the quality of Wikipedia content on Benin on the French Wikipedia portal and the Wikipedia Fon language incubator. The contributions made it possible to increase the use of photos uploaded during previous wiki loves photo contests (land, monuments, Africa, Folklore ...). New articles have been created and new contributors have joined our community. Due to the COVID pandemic, all activities were online. Four webinars were organized with Zoom. Overall we are very happy with the way the project went.

Outcome[edit]

At the end of the WPWP 2021 campaign in Benin, contributors had added photos to Wikipedia articles without illustration or not sufficiently illustrated. The contest had promoted the use of photos uploaded in several photo contests, organized by Wikimedia communities, in articles. The competition also helped improve the level of old and new contributors. Please find below our statistics:

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

Once again, the organization of online sessions this year made it possible to reach other target groups who are starting to take an interest in Wikipedia and its sister projects, also to reconnect with last year's volunteers who have been mentors for younger volunteers. With this second edition of the WPWP, the Wikimedian community of Benin strengthens the passion of its members who like to contribute directly online from where they are. Online activities have made it possible to respect barrier actions against the spread of the COVID-19 disease and to preserve the good health of volunteers in our community. The constant support and listening to the contributors involved made it possible to achieve our objectives.

  • What did not work so well?

Like any campaign which aims to reach several targets, the lack of computer tools of some did not promote a regular contribution with the delay of a few days in the contritributions during the campaign. Also the low speed of the Internet connection in the northern regions of the country prevents a large number of participants from attending the webinars; sometimes others saw themselves disconnected, sometimes others could not have access to the Zoom room, or even some had difficulty seeing the screen sharing in real time. His situations did not allow some members to better contribute during the campaign.

  • What would you do differently next time?

For the next time, we will do online activities and also face-to-face in order to allow those who do not have computer tools to come and contribute during training and all this while respecting the health measures in force. We plan to encourage, involve and further motivate new volunteers, alumni and members of our user group, to join us during the campaign, by making a strong communication around the project in order to inform our members to know how to edit very well. Wikipedia pages without mishandling. Finally, we will continue in our launch to extend the campaign to remote areas to increase the participation of contributors. All admins will also be notified of updates to the WPWP campaign launch to avoid any inconvenience that may arise.
