Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals?

YES, we have met our goals and made very good progress compared to the previous editions and even to our expectations for this year.

Are you happy with how the project went?

YES, we are glad that the project went well and would like to thank every one who contributed.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
at least 30 participants 146 unique participants Far more than expected
at least 300 uploaded photos 526 uploaded photos More than expected
at least 50 % of quality photos around 300 uploaded photos are of quality and can be potentially used More than 50%
at least 10 new photographed monuments More than 33 photographed monuments More than expected

Compared to WLM 2017 in Morocco with 321 uploaded photos and 98 participants (see wlm stats 2017), this year was very successful in terms of the content quantity (see wlm stats 2018). We can say that the target outcomes in terms of quantity have been achieved. This is mainly due to the support from the foundation and more particularly for the use of social media promotion and prize incentives.

The jury was recommended to use the following criteria:

  • Object pictured:
  1. Historical monument
  2. Valuable (not so popular)
  • Picture quality
  1. Lighting
  2. Angle of the shot
  3. Innovative shot
  4. Cares about the details
  • Meta data
  1. Description
  2. Free image (Creative Commons License)

The target outcomes in terms of quality have been quite challenging to evaluate and also to achieve. During the evaluation process, 65 out of 526 photos qualified as potential winners which is only a little more than ten percent of the total uploaded photos. This can be due to the poor quality of the uploaded photos or high criteria of the jury or even both.

A basic list of monuments has been established this year and many Wikidata entries have been created for the corresponding monuments. After the end of the competition, several follow-up tasks have been accomplished. These are few of them:

  • More than 1 000 Wikidata item for listed or classified architectural monuments, see mix-n-match catalog.
  • Uploaded images have been classified and mapped, see Commons categories.
  • Update of the administrative divisions in Morocco (after 2015).
  • New volunteers for next year's competition among participants.

Moreover, a small edit-a-thon was organised to sum up the results of WLM 2018 in Morocco and also to introduce different tools from various Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikidata and Commons) to newbies.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
One of the things that worked well was the promotion of the event in social media by aiming at people interested in culture, history and architecture who are based in Morocco.
  • What did not work so well?
The quality of the uploaded photos could be improved. The contact information of the participants are not always provided, it was difficult to contact them afterwards.
  • What would you do differently next time?
I would give clearer information on how to participate, quality of the photos and ask the participants to leave their contact information (at least their emails). For next time, we would like to have a complete list of monuments in Wikidata with their local IDs.
