Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes. The PubPub project is available under CC BY-NC 4.0 at https://wikipedia20.pubpub.org/ . Revisions of selected essays were submitted at the start of November; the manuscript is now in production and being copy-edited. The scheduled release is still Fall 2020, prior to Wikipedia's 20th year anniversary.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

Despite an aggressive schedule and significant challenges, we managed to submit the manuscript on time and proceed with MIT Press publishing under a CC license.

  • What did not work so well?

The use of PubPub introduced some difficulties as the developers changed feedback and export functionality while we were using it. But we persevered.

Also, we did not know how many words we would ultimately have, but we came up against the 120K maximum and were not able to include all the essays we'd have liked to in the print manuscript.

  • What would you do differently next time?
  1. We'd consider platforms other than PubPub, but assume it would be okay under a new effort.
  2. The unusual goal (reflective essays), process (abstract, revision, and then anonymous review and selection), and context (non-profit publisher publishing trade-leaning book under CC BY-NC) were all documented. These could've been stressed further, perhaps by way of a FAQ, to lessen any confusion.

Finances[edit]
