Project Goal[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Train potential new editors
  2. Add or improve content
  3. Create awareness of power of Wikipedia

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are planning two training sessions during a daylong edit-a-thon

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

The event will take place at Stand4 Gallery, an established art gallery in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. We will be using the Stand4 mailing list and do two email blasts, as well as Facebook invitations, and Facebook posts and reminders through the Stand4 page. We will post in the Facebook page Fight Back Bay Ridge. We will share the information with local politicians: Mathylde Frontus, Andrew Gounardes, Justin Brannan through their email and Facebook pages.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

The primary organizer, Isabelle Garbani, has been a Wikipedia editor since 2016.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We are doing our first Wikipedia edit-a-thon in Bay Ridge in an established art gallery, which has basic equipment such as tables, chairs, a projector and screen. The gallery has a large following in the area. The gallery owner is a knowledgeable curator and artist, who will help with content research. The training leader knowledgeable curator and artist, who will help with editing issues and content research (magazine articles, and files about artists to add or improve in Wikipedia).

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will collect participants' information during the event, and send a thank you note. Participants will also be directed to sign up for other local edit-a-thon during the session.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

The arts community of Bay Ridge is very engaged and supportive, yet there has been no Wikipedia events in the area, but interest is there (through discussions about the potential event in the last year). A lot of the artists have ties to local activists (through Fight Back Bay Ridge, and the Arab American Association of New York) which will fit right in with this year's theme. This is a great opportunity to add content about Arab American artists, and train new potential editors.

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 1
  2. Number of participants: 25
  3. Number of new editors: 5
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: 10
