Proposed participation[edit]

I am a long-time Wikipedian. I have been active for over a decade now. I have written 61 featured articles and 269 good articles, made 83,000 edits, and have created 2,000 pages. I attended the London Paralympics in 2012, the World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Toronto in 2014, the 2015 Women's U25 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship and the Rio Paralympics in 2106 as an accredited media representative. I have been issued media accreditation for the 2018 Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in Hamburg, Germany.

World championships for wheelchair basketball are held every four years. I created Wikipedia articles on all members of the Australian and German teams in London, added the Canadian team in Toronto in 2014, and the British team in Beijing in 2015. I have built up contacts with players and sports officials during previous events. This means that I will have access to venues, vantage points and people beyond that afforded to regular spectators. The purpose of the trip is to create articles on the event, and to thereby improve both the quantity and quality of Wikipedia articles on disability sports.

Examples of pages I have created from previous events can be seen at en:Australia women's national wheelchair basketball team at the 2012 Summer Paralympics (a featured article) and en:2015 Women's U25 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship. I wrote about my activities in Rio in the Wikimedia blog in an article entitled "Creating and writing sports history on Wikipedia: A Wikipedian’s experience at the Paralympic Games".

Goal and expected impact[edit]

The content created will be similar in nature and volume to that created in Rio, Beijing and Toronto.

  • Create a page on the event, and one on the team rosters. The event article will be updated daily.
  • Obtain profile photographs of members of the Australian, British, Canadian and German teams who do not yet have them. About 36 player profile photographs and 100 other images will be created that will be used on articles.
  • Create articles on the players of these teams if they do not already exit. About 24 new articles will be created.
  • Obtain profile photographs and information on players for other teams once this is done.

A detailed report will be written similar to those submitted for London and Rio.

Budget breakdown[edit]

I am requesting funds for the air fare to Hamburg from Canberra, the nearest international airport. This has been costed at AUD$2,000 = USD$1,650.

Exchange rates may fluctuate and flights become more expensive as time goes by.

Other instructions[edit]

Advance disbursement would be appreciated. I can book my own flights.
