Programs[edit]

Annual Conference

WikiConference Seoul 2017
This program aims to share knowledge around Wikimedia projects and provide participants with a space for networking and discussion.

An annual conference called WikiConference Seoul is the biggest event we hold. Since we established, we have hosted the event every year. Last year, Asaf Bartov, a staff member of Wikimedia Foundation visited South Korea and delivered a presentation on Wikidata. We estimated Asaf's training was very useful for users' capacity building. You can read our report for the last conference here.

This year, we will mainly talk about the Wikimedia Education Project and Structured Data project on the Wikimedia Commons. We will provide new comers with an introduction to Wikimedia projects and experienced users with free spaces for networking and discussion.

The program will include:

  • Wikimedia Education Projects
  • case studies about supports for minority users
  • Structured Data project on the Wikimedia Commons
  • sharing individual experiences or opinions of Wikimedia users

Measure of Success

  • over 80 participants
  • 20 active users
  • over 5 presentations
  • one new project for an overseas cooperation

Editathons for Specific Users

A editathon event for new users in 2017
This program aims to draw new or minority users and educate them how to edit Wikimedia projects.

Since the establishment in 2014, we have held editions for new users. This year, we will continue this editathon to draw and educate them. We hosted editathons for women and sexual minority users last year, but the results were not satisfactory. We think this year is time to look for new ways to draw the marginal users. We estimate Wikimedia Taiwan's A Room of WikiWomen's Own project is a good case for us. We will design a new project for women and sexual minority users with reference to the Taiwan's case.

  • Activities: 1-2 editathons for new users and 1 editathon for women or sexual minority users
  • Have around 10 participants per event
  • Create or edit 5-10 articles per event

Partnerships

This program aims to create or maintain partnerships with outer organizations to raise awareness about Wikimedia projects and enhance contents of the projects.
  • We have been cooperating with some local governments to share public information on the Wikimedia projects since last year. We held three offline editathons for public servants and one online editathon for Korean Wikipedia users with Seosan City Government last year. The government also donated over 100 images to Wikimedia Commons. We will continue this cooperation project with other local government including Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Government and Daegu City Government this year.
    • Acitivies: Hold over 1 offline editations and have over 20 attendees
    • Total over 50 participants who are public servants
    • Edit or create 20-30 articles
    • Upload over 100 images
  • We will create a partnership with educational organizations for middle or high school students and help them to understand importance of the Wikimedia projects as an educational tool.
    • Acitivies: Create 1-2 partnerships
    • Hold over 2 offline editatons or 1 wikicamp
    • Draw 20-30 new users per event (including staff of the organizations)
    • Hold 1 photo walk event and upload over 100 images.
  • We are talking about a cooperation with Korea Library Association (KLA), and planing to hold an editathon for staff of the organization. We will search for efficient ways to reach out to librarians and help them to use the projects with the orgainzation.
    • Acitivies: Hold 1-2 offline editathons for staff of the KLA and have 20 new users
    • Participate in an annual conference hosted by the KLA
    • Launch one experimental project for librarians (e.g. Wiki Town project)

Education

This program aims to promote Wikimedia projects as an educational tool and collect high-quality articles submitted as an assignment

We thinks of this educational programs as one of the most important programs in a situation where Wikipedia is not a dominant encyclopedia in South Korea. Fortunately, interests in Wikimedia projects as an educational tool are gradually increasing among educators. We managed our own educational program for the first time last year, and we will continue this program to promote the projects and teach digital literacy to students.

  • Acitivies: Hold one offline meetup for educators
  • Help two classes in first semester and 1-2 classes in second semester and have over 100 new users
  • Create or edit over 20 articles

Community

This program aims to support Wikimedia communities and encourage active users.
Winners of Wikimedian of the Year event in 2017

It is important to support active users as well as to draw new users in order to maintain and activate a community. Since last year, we have granted a Korean Wikimedia user a scholarship for participation in Wikimania in order to share lasted knowledge related to Wikimedia projects and create a new project.

  • Activities: 1 participant from South Korea in Wikimania and 1 report

In addition, we have run an event to comprise dedicated users within Korean Wikimedia communities at the end of the year since 2016. This event is called "Wikimedian of the Year." During December, Korean Wikimedia users recommend candidates and vote for them to select the most active or dedicated users that year. After the election, winners are given prizes, and we hold a ceremony to congratulate the winners and discuss over issues on Wikimedia community. Our assembly meeting decided to expand the event and increase existing 2 departments to 4 departments this year.

  • Activities: 4 departments including contribution to contents, contribution to featured/good articles, administration, and a dedicated new user.
  • Voting during December
  • 1 congratulatory ceremony including free discussion

Annual Conference

WikiConference Seoul 2018

On October 6, we hold our annual conference at Seoul Global Center. Total 65 people attend the conference. It was less than we expected, and we thought it was because a typhoon was passing the South region of Korea. We planned to introduce Structured Data project on the Wikimedia Commons, but we concluded it was too early. Instead, we invited Diego Sáez-Trumper from Wikimedia Foundation. He delivered his presentation remotely, and introduced Wikimedia projects' impact on AI technology. Especially, we distributed fifty participants books on Wikipedia, which we published recently. Authors of the book talked about why they wrote the book and what they wrote in the book.

We employed professional video shooter this year, and we will distribute some of the presentations under a free license. Surveys of attendees are not completed yet.

20 active users 15 active users
over 5 presentations 5 presentations and 1 talk

Editathons

Although we introduce Wikipedia for new comer in our conference, it was not enough for them to edit articles. We are planing a follow-up editahon for new users after the conference. We will hold it in late October or early November.

We created new partnership with War and Women Rights Museum. We hope to host an editathon for women with the organization. We explained about this more at the Partnership part.

Partnerships

As we planned, we hold an editathon for KLA staff on July 26. New comers from the editathon were less than we expected, but it is not very important in this partnership. We introduced 1ref1lib project to the staff, and they showed strong interest in the project. They decided to encourage librarians to learn Wikipedia and participate in the 1ref1lib project. You can see a promotion posted by KLA here. As the result, eleven groups of librarians apply for the education of Wikipedia, and we will teach them this year.

As we mentioned above, we begun a new partnership with the War and Women Rights Museum. We educated Wikipedia to three staff members of the museum. Our goal is to grow them into Wikipedians in Residence. They are planning to donate images they own to the Commons. We will meet them in late October again.

Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Government employed an editor from July to August. He created or edited 19 articles related to the region with our help. You can see the result at a tracking page for his activity. Unfortunately, it is uncertain whether this cooperation would be continued, because the servant who was responsible for the project moved to other department.

Education

During 1st semester of this year, we helped students to submit their assignment on Korean Wikipedia. You can see the result at a tracking page for it.

As we mentioned in our report for WikiConferce Seoul 2017, we planned to cooperate with Sookmyung Women's Universty. Unfortunately, it was failed. Instead, we found a English teacher who is willing to participate in our education project. She is working for a high school for gifted students. We visited the school and introduce Wikipedia and its principles to her students in August. We will help students to create or improve English Wikipedia articles during 2nd semester.

2nd semester

Annual Conference

Total participants were less than we expected, because a typhoon passed the south of Korea. We recored the presentations and talk, and uploaded 3 videos. We planed to invite foreign speaker and launch a new project with him/her, but we didn't achieved it. Dr. Yun Jin-hyeok's presentation was siginificant for us, and his paper motivated the Hankyoreh and Science Dong-A to feature Wikipedia's bias issue that had not been known in South Korea.

Sub-Project Goals Status Description
Annual Conference over 80 participants Partial Total 65 participants attended.
20 active users Partial 15 active users attended.
over 5 presentations Reached 5 presentation and 1 talk
one new project for an overseas cooperation Not reached

Editathons for Specific Users

We could achieve our goals in cooperation with Chilam Public Library and Yangjeong Girls' High School. We hold two consecutive editathon events in the Chilam Public Library, and total 9 new users attended. Although most of the participants expressed their satisfaction, the number of the participants in second event dropped sharply. We need to resolve the problem. Students of the Yangjeong held an editathon event to celebrate International Human Solidarity Day and total 20 girls participated in.

Sub-Project Goals Status Description
Editathons for Specific Users 1-2 editathons for new users and 1 editathon for women or sexual minority users Reached 2 editathons for new users, 1 editahon for women
Have around 10 participants per event Reached Total 29 participants attended.
Create or edit 5-10 articles per event Reached Total 25 articles were edited or created

Partnership

Although the result of the cooperation with a local government doesn't seem to be bad, we had difficulty in maintaining the partnership, because servants who were responsible for the project frequently changed. We think it is more efficient to employ a smaller number of workers than to force numerous servants to edit articles in this case.

We also has had difficulty in motivating students to edit Wikipedia in universities, because the project is not dominant in South Korea. Fortunately, we found other opportunity in high schools, because Korea's educational policy emphasizes students' various experiences. Student of the Yangjeong will edit Wikipedia articles throughout this year, and we expect a Wikipedia-editing group to be established in Hayang Girls' High School.

We evaluate that the cooperation with the Korea Library Association was successful last year. We've already discussed about extending the partnership this year. KLA will help us to promote 1lib1ref project in South Korea.
