Proposed Participation

I will be co-presenting a workshop titled The Art of GLAM-Wiki: The Basics of Sharing Cultural Knowledge with the World on Wikipedia. My co-presenter is Sara Snyder, Webmaster at the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution. She is also a Wikipedian. Here is our workshop description:

This half-day workshop will explore how your organization can share its cultural heritage content on the world's fifth most popular website: Wikipedia. Based on the instructors knowledge and involvement with the GLAM-Wiki Initiative (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums with Wikipedia), this workshop will teach you how to engage with Wikipedia and the Wikipedia community, the basics of Wikipedia's policies and procedures, basic editing skills to get you started, and unique opportunities to share your institutions cultural heritage holdings with a large and diverse audience of readers and researchers. This workshop aims to build attendee confidence in working with Wikipedia and the importance of sharing data through it - including curatorial data, metadata, and media.

This workshop, which costs $50 for participants (all goes back to the conference nothing to the presenters), will educate arts professionals about opportunities related to Wikimedia partnerships, which are a part of the GLAM-Wiki project. I am a long time Wikipedian and a current and former Wikipedian in Residence. Snyder has given numerous presentations nationally about her work with the GLAM-Wiki project, and served as my former project manager for my residency at the Archives of American Art.

Goal and Expected Impact

By using our experiences with GLAM-Wiki to educate arts professionals, we hope to further develop opportunities and partnerships with arts libraries, an area we are still lacking in partnership with (the Archives of American Art remains the only "art" specific archive/library we have worked with thus far). This conference brings together professionals from around the world, and will be a great chance to open minds, show people how easy it truly is to work with Wikimedia, and to focus on opportunities and next steps for workshop attendees. Without workshops and outreach events like this, many professionals are left unaware of the exciting opportunities that await them in regards to furthering their missions (which often align with our mission of disseminating free knowledge) through affordable, unique and innovative concepts such as GLAM-Wiki.

Our main goal, aside from general dissemination of the GLAM-WIki concept, will be to help form "next steps," for participants, and I will be providing post-workshop follow up and support to attendees. These contacts will also be shared via the US GLAM-Wiki contact sheet. I also hope that they will have interest in broader OpenGLAM and US GLAM-Wiki Consortium participation. If we can leave this workshop with new opportunities for opening cultural data, and in the next year, have projects to show from it, then we will have met our intended goal!
