Budget breakdown[edit]

The budget will cover the prizes for at least 3 separate picture competitions (max. $300 each) and includes a margin of $100 to cover any costs that might come up outside the prizes themselves (e.g. travel, printed diplomas, postage fee for the prizes).

Project scope[edit]

Building on our experience with organizing a photo competition in 2009 we realized that we could engage the photographer community better if we joined an already established photo competition by establishing a special category - in an already established competition -for works under free licenses. We would provide the prizes and choose the winners, while the already established competition would provide publicity, participants and infrastructure.

As part of this project we intend to establish a cooperation with one of the local photo-uploading sites. We will be, then, sponsors of a category for free license works in their photo competitions that are already attracting a big audience. Our involvement and the prizes offered by us will thus encourage the photographers to put their works under free licenses and possibly to learn about Wikimedia Commons. We would like to participate in at least three different competitions to maximize the number of quality pictures gathered and to establish a continuous presence promoting free licenses, the Wikimedia projects and ourselves.

Project goal[edit]

We will participate in photo competitions offering prizes for the best free-license entries promoting free content and gaining quality illustrations for Commons.

Non-financial requirements[edit]

None.

Fit to strategy[edit]

The project will bring good quality photos to Wikimedia Commons and to other Wikimedia projects.

Hopefully some of the participants will decide to contribute to Commons even outside the framework of the competitions, again increasing participation (and we really need to increase the number of good photographers in our community in Hungary) and quality.

Even without contributing to Commons they will be aware of the importance of choosing free (as opposed to the often chosen NC or ND) licenses allowing their works to be used to enhance our projects.

Other benefits[edit]

The project will allow us to promote free content licenses with the competition organizers and the established photographer community of their sites.

Measures of success[edit]

The success of this project can be measured through the number of photographers engaged and the amount of good quality pictures uploaded to Commons. We will consider this project a success if we gather at least a 100 good quality photographs per competition (at least 300 in total for the 3 competitions).
