From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal. Documenting Nigerian Film and Cinema is a project dedicated to improving the representation of Nigeria's film industry on Wikiquote by creating, expanding, and enhancing articles related to Nigerian and African films, actors, actresses, directors, filmmakers, producers, screenwriters, authors, cinematographers, film festivals, and other notable contributors to the creative industry.

The project aims to bridge knowledge gaps by documenting the achievements and contributions of individuals and institutions that have shaped Nigerian and African cinema. Through this initiative, participants will develop skills in researching, writing, editing, and referencing reliable sources while contributing high-quality, freely accessible information to wikiquote.

As part of the Wikimedian Fan Club's strategy to expand its reach and strengthen collaboration across the university, the club has begun partnering with various academic departments whose fields align with specific Wikimedia projects. For this project, we will collaborate with the Department of Performing Arts, whose students possess expertise and a strong interest in theatre, film, and the creative arts. This partnership is expected to increase participation, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, attract new contributors, and ensure the creation of more accurate and comprehensive content related to Nigerian and African film and cinema.

As part of this project, the event will also serve as the official handover ceremony of the Wikimedian Fan Club, University of Ilorin. During the ceremony, the outgoing executive members will formally hand over leadership responsibilities to the newly elected executives.

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

This project will consist of a physical training session and an edit-a-thon designed to introduce participants to the goals of Wikiquote and equip them with practical skills for contributing to the platform. The training will focus on teaching participants how to create and improve Wikiquote pages, add well sourced and verifiable quotations, follow Wikiquote's content and formatting guidelines, and contribute responsibly to the preservation of notable quotations.

Following the training, participants will take part in a guided edit-a-thon, where they will create new pages and improve existing ones by adding properly sourced quotations from notable Nigerian and African figures, including filmmakers, actors, directors, authors, academics, sports personalities, and other public figures. This hands-on session will enable both new and experienced contributors to apply their newly acquired skills while helping to expand the availability of reliable, well-documented quotations on Wikiquote.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? We have informed the wikimedia Users Group Nigeria about our intention to write this proposal.

You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using. https://www.instagram.com/wikimediafanclubunilorin/?__pwa=1

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Awareness and Advocacy

The core objective of this project is to promote awareness of Wikiquote within the University of Ilorin community while strengthening participation in Wikimedia projects through targeted outreach and engagement. This initiative also seeks to expand the visibility and activities of the Wikimedian Fan Club, University of Ilorin, by introducing more students and faculty members to the importance of preserving notable quotations and contributing to open knowledge platforms.

To achieve this, we will conduct an awareness campaign using digital flyers, printed flyers, posters, and direct outreach to inform students and the wider university community about the purpose and significance of Wikiquote. These materials will highlight the value of documenting well-sourced quotations from notable Nigerian and African figures, including filmmakers, actors, directors, authors, academics, sports personalities, and other influential individuals whose words reflect cultural, educational, and societal impact.

Through the Wikimedian Fan Club, University of Ilorin, we aim to engage students from across different disciplines and encourage active participation in Wikiquote editing activities. This approach will help attract new contributors, strengthen community participation, and promote the documentation of notable quotations from Nigerian and African figures in film, academia, sports, and other fields. It will also foster long-term interest in contributing to Wikiquote and supporting the broader Wikimedia movement.

Communication Strategy

To ensure effective communication and coordination before, during, and after the event, we will use the Wikimedian Fan Club’s WhatsApp platform as our primary communication channel. This platform will be used to share event updates, training materials, Wikiquote editing guides, sourcing guidelines, and instructions for participants throughout the project.

The WhatsApp group will also serve as a support and engagement space where participants can ask questions, receive guidance on creating and improving Wikiquote entries, learn how to properly source quotations, and share their progress during the edit-a-thon. This will help maintain engagement and provide continuous support for both new and experienced editors.

In addition, the project will be promoted across various social media platforms and relevant university communication channels to broaden awareness of Wikiquote and increase participation in Wikimedian Fan Club activities on campus.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

yes, they have equipments nessecary to participate in this event.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)? We will engage the participants after the events through our WhatsApp community group chat.
