From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary

[edit]

The KWASU 1Lib1Ref Citation Challenge: Finding the Proof for Wikipedia is a project focused on engaging both experienced and new Wikipedia editors within the KWASU Wikimedia Fan Club on how to use reliable sources and add proper references to improve the quality of contributions. Since the club comprises a diverse mix of proficiency levels, this initiative will allow seasoned editors to deepen their advanced research skills while guiding new contributors who are still developing their Wikimedia editing skills. Through collaborative citation drives and practical training sessions, participants will gain strong referencing skills, learn how to identify trustworthy academic sources, and systematically find the proof needed to validate Wikipedia articles. The project aims to utilize the strengths of our established editors to build reliable editing practices among new contributors, ultimately improving the overall credibility of regional and general-interest content.

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings? This project will consist of 1 physical traning and 2 online training, and edit-a-thon will follow.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using. This will be announced on WUGN related channels.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

We will engage participants during the training sessions on how to effectively contribute to the citation drive and share campaign updates across social media platforms. To ensure continuous communication, a dedicated engagement group will be created, and we will maintain direct contact with participants through their provided details for ongoing mentorship.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

Yes, we do. I Pet002 (talk) and Obapeace (talk)

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants have their internet enabled mobile phones and laptops to contribute to the project. And they will be trained on how to successfully add missing references to Wikipedia articles and improve their content.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)? We are going to engage participants through WhatsApp group created for the event and through their contacts provided during the training and have a follow up engagement.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Impact

[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets (only those applicable to your project):

  1. Number of events - 3
  2. Number of participants - 30
  3. Number of new editors - 15
  4. Number of of articles created - 10
  5. Number of of articles improved - 200
  6. Number of of images uploaded - 10
  7. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) - 30

Metrics tracking

[edit]

How do you plan to track your project metrics? (do not create a metrics dashboard until your project has been approved for funding) We will track project metrics by setting up a dedicated Wikimedia Outreach Dashboard once the project is approved. Participants will be onboarded onto this dashboard during the training sessions, allowing us to accurately track real-time contributions, including the number of articles edited, total edits made, and the volume of citations added throughout the campaign

Contest & prize-giving events

[edit]

How would decide the winners of your contest (If you are going to have a contest, what is your scoring criteria)

  • 2 points for every single reference well cited
  • 5 points for Wikimedia articles improved with relevant citations
  • The user with highest point at the end will be awarded the winner of the contest
