Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/A Wikimedia Outreach/Training in Bauchi Area of Bauchi State

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • This outreach/training is aimed at introducing the Wikimedia foundation and its projects to people living in the Bauchi area of Bauchi State. As a Corp member currently serving in Bauchi state and having gone halfway through my service year, I realized that there are little or no active Wikimedians in the state capital where I’m currently serving. Therefore I found it imperative to carry out this project which would introduce the Wikimedia space to new recruits and also improve the English Wikipedia and Wikisource projects. In the English Wikipedia training, participants will be taught the best practices on making quality edits on Wikipedia. On Wikisource, they'll be taught on how to proofread and validate texts on Wikisource as we'll also be adding selected Nigeria books in the Public Domain to Wikisource. They'll also be taught on how to link Wikisource author pages to the authors profile on English Wikipedia.

Project Plan

[edit]

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We’ll be having a 2-day training, an edit-a-thon and a contest

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I’ll inform the Nigerian Wikimedia Community via the WhatsApp platform

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

I’ll carry out a pre-event survey to collate information of interested participants. I’ll then create a WhatsApp platform where information related to the project will be disseminated.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

I’ll be the only facilitator for this event as I have no knowledge of any experienced Wikimedians around my vicinity. My username is User:Timzy D'Great

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants will be able to contribute with their mobile phones and laptops. They'd be tutored on how to make quality contributions to Wikimedia projects

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

The dedicated WhatsApp platform of the project will be used to facilitate the follow-up process

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project is in line with the Wikimedia mission as it aims to recruit and engage new editors who will contribute to the development of free educational contents. Carrying out this project in the Bauchi area is important in ensuring that the Wikimedia message is spread far and wide. I have already spoken to a few people on a one-on-one basis and they all gave a positive response. With the amount of positive responses I’ve received, we might actually be able to establish a fully functional Wikimedia hub after the completion of the project.

Impact

[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets (only those applicable to your project):

  1. Number of events - 2
  2. Number of participants - 30
  3. Number of new editors - 30
  4. Number of of articles created - 50
  5. Number of of articles improved - 150
  6. Number of of images uploaded -
  7. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) - 30

Metrics tracking

[edit]

How do you plan to track your project metrics? (do not create a metrics dashboard until your project has been approved for funding)

The contest result will be determined based on the amount of contributions made and the quality of contributions made. The Outreach Dashboard, the Xtool and the Wikisource Contest Tool will be used to determine the winners of the contest. Also, I’ll scrutinize their edits to ensure that only quality contributions are made.

[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
