Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Breaking Barriers: Empowering Women through Wikimedia
Project summary
[edit]Briefly summarize your project proposal.
The International Women's Day is a global celebration held annually on March 8th to commemorate the achievements of women. It is also a day the world encourages women all over the world to participate and contribute to development, thereby breaking barriers. Anambra Network will collaborate with Women of Substance Empowerment Organization ( NGO) and Association of Women Librarians of Nigerian Library Association, Anambra State Chapter (AWLIN/NLA) in commemorating the 2025 #IWD through the online Session and the physical event of facilitation of creating and editing Wikimedia contents.
The women seem to be marginalized and have low participation and contribution on Wikimedia. They often face challenges of inclusion which affect their development. Hence, it is a good thing that the world has a day to remember them and celebrate the value they add for human existence.
Thus, the women will be introduced to Wikimedia, while discussions, awareness and digital literacy of creating contents will be facilitated. Thus, this activity will offer open learning, free knowledge and skill acquisition. Empowering these Women on how to access and create contents Wikimedia will widen their knowledge, enhance women's visibility on Wikimedia for Diversity, Inclusion and Equity.
Again, this community engagement and celebration on women are in tandem with the SDG 5 (Gender equality) and SDG 10 (reduced inequalities). The activities will focus on wmen's history, achievements and contributions. They will be on Wikipedia and Wikidata creation and editing in English and translation to Igbo language.
