[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- We will host one training on the 15th of November. The training will introduce both new and existing members to editing on Wikidata, which will allow them to apply their skills by creating and improving Wikidata about Rivers State communities and cities.
2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.
- We have been engaging:
- Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, through internal community discussions.
- Wikimedia Rivers Network WhatsApp group with over 70 members, where updates have already been shared.
- Wikimedia Meta-Wiki (project page creation will follow approval).
3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.
- We will use a multi-channel approach:
- WhatsApp Groups (WUGN Rivers State & Nigeria Network) for direct communication and real-time updates.
- Event Page on Meta/Outreach Dashboard to provide details, track participation, and resources.
- Social Media Announcements (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter/X) to promote participation.
- Direct Outreach to universities, community-based organisations, and cultural institutions to invite participants.
4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify
5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- Most participants own laptops and mobile devices. For those who may lack technical skills, the training session will provide hands-on guidance in:
- Creating and improving data entries on Wikidata.
Internet access and training materials will also be provided to support their contributions.
6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- Participants will be added to the Wikimedia Rivers Network WhatsApp group for continuous engagement.
- Post-event mentorship will be provided by experienced editors.
- Opportunities to join future Wikimedia projects and edit-a-thons will be shared.
- Certificates and recognition for active contributors will be provided to encourage retention.
