Project summary

[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • This event will focus on quotes from Nigerian legal practitioners, judges, lawyers, legislators, and human rights advocates on Wikiquote. It aims to highlight the intellectual legacy and public contributions of legal professionals whose voices have shaped the legal and political landscape of Nigeria.

This event will serve as a follow up on an earlier introductory session that introduced participants to Wikiquote as a Wikimedia project. In this follow up campaign, participants will deepen their understanding of how to source, attribute, and properly document verified quotations while learning how to create and improve pages for Nigerian legal figures.

Project Plan

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

There will be one physical training and edit-a-thon, with a primary focus on Nigerian legal practitioners on Wikiquote. The event aims to introduce participants to the importance of preserving and sharing notable quotes from Nigerian judges, lawyers, legislators, and legal scholars. It will highlight the role of these legal professionals in shaping justice, governance, and public discourse in Nigeria.

Participants will receive hands on training on how to identify verifiable quotes, properly format them, and attribute them accurately to their original sources. The edit-a-thon will provide a collaborative space for learning, editing, and sharing, while promoting legal documentation, and the growth of open knowledge related to Nigeria’s legal system on Wikiquote.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

I have notified the Wikimedia user group about our proposal via their meta page:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

To ensure maximum participation and engagement, we plan to create widespread awareness of the event among both existing contributors and new participants, particularly those with interest in law and legal documentation. This will be achieved through the strategic sharing of e-fliers and regular updates across our social media platforms, including Instagram and WhatsApp. By leveraging these digital channels, we aim to inform legal communities, law students and legal researchers about the event. Our goal is to build anticipation, encourage early interest, and sustain momentum as we approach the date of the legal focused Wikiquote training and edit-a-thon.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead/assist the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse and sign your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

User:Jessephu General secretary

User:Akintundedaniel Vice president

User:Kingaustin07 president

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Our participants have internet access devices such as laptops, tablets, smartphones to fully connect and participate during the period of the campaign and also during edit a thon.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Our target participants own electronic devices such as smartphone and laptops, which will enable their full participation. After the event, we will continue to engage both new and returning participants through our community WhatsApp group chat.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project aims to bridge the content gap by focusing on notable quotes from Nigerian legal practitioners on Wikiquote. This event will bring together participants from both UITH and the University of Ilorin main campus. The goal is to follow up, introduce members of the Wikimedian Fan Club and the broader university community to the Wikiquote project, with a specific focus on documenting quotes of Nigerian lawyers, judges, legislators, and legal scholars. By uniting both campuses, the event encourages collaboration, shared learning, and a deeper understanding of how legal voices can be preserved and amplified through open knowledge platforms.
